Program Description
The master program REMENA is offered by the University of Kassel, Germany, and the Cairo University, Egypt. It is an application-oriented program where graduates are expected to work for companies and institutions in the field of renewable energies to foster the further development on an international level.
The overall duration of the program is 21 months which are divided into three semesters according to the following table:
Semester | Duration | Site | Study Contents |
first | 6 months | Cairo/Kassel | qualification/compulsory/elective modules |
second | 6 months | Kassel/Cairo | qualification/compulsory/elective modules |
third | 9 months | MENA region | master thesis module |
Upon successful completion of the program, the student is awarded
- a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree from University of Kassel and
- a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree from Cairo University.
Essentially, prospective applicants for the program should
- hold a bachelor degree in engineering, natural sciences, economics or social sciences
- have one year working experience in the field of renewable energies
- be highly motivated
- be fluent in English.
Further admission requirements can be found here.
As can be seen from the table, the time durations of the three semesters are different and reflect the overall structure of the program starting either in October in Cairo or in April in Kassel:
- The first semester (October – March) in Cairo or (April - September) in Kassel is foreseen for compulsory modules, elective modules and so-called qualification modules, where the latter cover basics of thermodynamics and electrical engineering and are typically required from students holding a Bachelor degree in economics or social sciences.
- The second semester (April – September) in Kassel or (October - March) in Cairo comprises also compulsory, elective and qualification modules. Where the elective modules can be chosen according to the students’ preferences.
- The third semester in the MENA region is foreseen for the master thesis module which can be conducted in companies or institutions being active in the field of renewable energies. The thesis itself takes at most six months. The residual time can be used for establishing contacts with the aforementioned companies and institutions etc.
The module contents are both technical and non-technical. Intercultural topics including German and Arab language courses are integrated into the program. The list of modules can be found here. Modules totaling at least 90 credits must be passed where 73 credits are from compulsory modules including the master thesis and students have to earn at least 17 credits from a list of elective modules to be chosen according to personal preferences. Sample schedules for choosing modules can be found here.
As mentioned above, the primary professional activity of REMENA graduates will be in the field of application-oriented and/or business environments for renewable energies. This comprises jobs in consulting, acquisition and management of projects, institutional activities, interdisciplinary teams etc., where intercultural competencies beyond technical ones are of utmost importance for the success of the project at hand. However, for students with a sound technical background and depending on their professional experience, it is also possible to go for a PhD degree in a corresponding area.
