Why volunteer?

Through volunteering, you can do your part for a better world! At the same time, volunteering can give you new insights into your academic subject and help you develop skills that you can use within your course and in your professional life after university.

By supporting charitable and community causes, you’ll show your ability to work as part of a team, solve problems, show initiative and take on responsibility. And that’s hugely important to future employers.

In many volunteering opportunities, you also create connections with people outside of campus and the university bubble, giving you new local contacts and also a more grounded perspective on life in Germany.

Seminars with Service Learning

Students participating in Service Learning-seminars earn credits for their studies, as Service Learning is integrated into the university curriculum.

You can find seminars with service learning-components in the course catalogue/HIS-LSF.

SchlüsSL-Seminars

The SchlüsSL-Seminar is a seminar that combines modules teaching key competencies such as project management and communication skills with direct practical application by planning a project for a non-profit community organisation.

The seminar is offered every term. In 2020/2021, you can also take a newly offered SchlüsSL-seminar with a focus on intercultural communication skills. Students from all departments can participate and earn credits for their additive key competence skills. The course language is German.

Service Learning at the Universität Kassel is shaped by three criteria:

  1. Students create real community impact in answer to a clearly stated need of the community partner
  2. Students' community-service experiences are linked to academic teaching; students reflect and evaluate their learning experiences.
  3. Students meet relevant stakeholders or people with different social backgrounds
