Welcome to GradZ-Umwelt

Seeing the bigger picture through interdisciplinary environmental education: that is what the Graduate Center for Environmental Research and Education (GradZ) at the University of Kassel stands for. Both PhD candidates and master students benefit free of charge from a profound graduate training, access to valuable networks and support in pursuing their scientific careers.

GradZ is one of two graduate centres at the University of Kassel. It serves as an umbrella institution for six faculties and a scientific centre. Currently, GradZ comprises 14 master and two doctoral programmes, all of which are related to the environmental field. This stresses the centre's interidisciplinarity as well as its attempt to link graduate training for master students and PhD candidates. Thanks to its discipline-spanning educational programmes, GradZ is able to promote a great variety of competencies and skills from different research areas.

What we have to Offer

"UmweltWissen" Certificate

GradZ offers master students and PhD candidates of the University of Kassel the opportunity to acquire the so-called "UmweltWissen" certificate. This advanced training certificate is available to all master students as well as to PhD candidates whose research is embedded in an environmental context. Anyone interested in receiving the certificate has to take part in at least two events organised by GradZ, such as environmentally relevant workshops, excursions or conferences. In addition, all aspirants are obliged to present their thesis in front of other participants, and take part in courses offered by GradZ.

The "UmweltWissen" certificate gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and interested in an additional area of interest, illustrating your willingness to go beyond the regular requirements of your curriculum as well as your sensitivity for current and future developments of environmental issues. PhD candidates get the chance to learn more about specific issues linked to their research, and can also attend extra-curricular courses to improve themselves.

Altogether, there are three different types of certificates:

  • UmweltWissen: Essentials (UW:G)
  • UmweltWissen: Social Sciences (UW:S)
  • UmweltWissen: Natural Sciences and Engineering (UW:NI)

More details on the "UmweltWissen" certificates can be found in our "Mehr Wissen lohnt sich!" brochure (available in German only).

Another special programme organised by GradZ is the "Projektstudium", a hands-on training course. The "Projektstudium" is open to students across all faculties. A topic dealt with in the past was, for example, "solar campus - energy efficiency at the University of Kassel". The "Projektstudium" is meant to add work- and practice-oriented projects to the typical course catalogue. As a consequence, students do not only acquire and reflect on their expert knowledge, but also learn how apply it in an active, independent and responsible manner.

Feedback from Students and PhD Candidates...

…"You know, it really makes sense to get access to valuable contacts while you're doing your doctorcate..." (alumna, GradZ participant, 2010)

…"So far, I've had the chance to attend two workshops/courses I can highly recommend. I wish workshops on soft skills, such as "Formatting with Word", or "Academic Writing", were promoted more visibly AND offered more often. I'm sure, I'm not the only one who'll be expected to write concise texts on a daily basis as part of their current and future career. GradZ courses are really priceless in this regard!..." (student, Master of Business and Engineering, 2013)
