INCHER-Kassel mourns Helmut Winkler

05/10/2018. INCHER-Kassel mourns the loss of its long-time member Helmut Winkler. Winkler has been higher education researcher and professor at the University of Kassel up to his retirement in 2005. As early as in the 1970s, Helmut had been member of the University’s planning committee, and from the founding of INCHER-Kassel on, he had been active as researcher, lecturer and at times as managing director of INCHER-Kassel. He died on 04.10.2018 in Kassel at the age of 77.

Born in 1940, Winkler first studied aeronautical engineering in Essen and at the Technical University of Munich. He worked as engineer before moving to Kassel in 1970, where he joined the founding group of the Gesamthochschule Kassel as a course planner for the engineering programmes. In 1977 he completed his dissertation at the University of Stuttgart on "Planning of Comprehensive Universities".

After the phase of the establishment of the Gesamthochschule Kassel he joined the newly founded Research Centre on Higher Education and Work – the later INCHER-Kassel. He remained at INCHER-Kassel as senior researcher up to his retirement in 2005. For many years he has been managing director of INCHER-Kassel.

In his research activities, Helmut Winkler was particularly interested in three topics: university development in emerging and developing countries, the relationship between higher education and the world of work, and engineering education. In 1996, he habilitated on the topic of engineering education, and in 2002, he was appointed an unscheduled professor at the University of Kassel.

Helmut Winkler has taught with great joy in the University’s master's program "Higher Education", offered from 2004 to 2011. Former international students of the master's program like to remember the annual summer parties, which Helmut Winkler and his wife Anita arranged for them. He taught as well as various higher education institutions in Germany and other countries.

Helmut Winkler was a passionate advisor and consultant of higher education institution all over the world. He spent two years at higher education institutions in Korea and one year in Nigeria. He also spent longer periods in France and the U.S. as well as in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Even after his retirement he worked as consultant for universities in Ethiopia and China and took over a senior professorship in Africa.

We will always remember Helmut Winkler as dedicated and enthusiastic teacher and as a higher education researcher, who had a strong sense of the practical relevance of his research. He was a highly esteemed conversation partner for many young researchers - especially those coming from an international context. Our sympathy goes to his wife Anita and his family.
