Since 2012 an almost comprehensive survey of graduates of state funded universities and universities of applied sciences has annually taken place in North Rhine-Westphalia. These surveys are part of a nationwide graduate survey (KOAB) in which graduates of about 70 universities in Germany were interviewed about 1.5 years after graduation about higher education studies and their further career.

In 2013/2014 INCHER-Kassel conducted a survey of the examination year 2011 which was published as part of a study ("Study and Career in NRW") on behalf of the Ministry of Culture and Science of the German State of North Rhine-Westphalia. A second study was carried out between March 2016 and February 2017, which focused on the examination year 2014. It was completed in June 2017.

The high number of participating universities as well as the good participation rate of the graduates in the KOAB surveys made it possible to produce differentiated assessments at the level of university types and of subject groups.
