I am an empirical sociologist interested in theory development and the methodological challenges of analyzing effects and mechanisms. The field of higher education and science studies provides innumerous phenomena for researching interrelating effects and mechanisms from the society via the organizational to the individual level and vice versa. I study effects and mechanisms on the topics of socialization in doctoral education and training (knowledge structures and processes), publication and citation in sciences (indicators and practices), knowledge and technology transfer (disciplinary differences and transfer activities), and quality assurance (organizing and procedures).

Since 2012 I am the head of the research unit "Innovation & Transfer" at INCHER-Kassel. Currently I am the principal investigator of the project "Academic Profession in the Knowledge Societies" (duration 2016-2020). Just recently the third party funding ended for the research project "Quality assurance of studying and teaching via processes of accreditation and evaluation" (duration 2014-2017), of which I was co-principal investigator (together with Prof. Dr. Georg Krücken). I teach in sociology at University of Kassel.

I am a reviewer for the European Journal of Higher Education (EJHE), Higher Education Policy (HEP), International Journal of Management in Education (IJMIE), Studies in Higher Education, “The Changing Academy – The Changing Academic Profession in International Comparative Perspective” (book), and Zeitschrift für Hochschulentwicklung (ZfHE).
