PhD Project Title:

Assessment of Decent Work Initiatives along the Agricultural Value Chain in Ghana: Comparing and Improving Effects for Economic and Social Upgrading

Abstract of PhD Thesis

The concept of decent work in global production networks (or global value chains) has received huge attention recently in scholarly articles. Regardless of the attention received, there are ample of issues to be resolved. While most studies have dealt with the impact of decent work initiatives on economic upgrading, the impact on social upgrading has received little attention.

This thesis aims at looking at decent work initiatives implemented in two commodity chains (cocoa and most probably palm oil) in Ghana. We will analyse and compare the effects of these initiatives particularly in the perspective of how they contribute to both economic upgrading and social upgrading.

To address the research gap, the study will adapt a systematic framework developed by Barrientos and others in 2011 for examining the linkages between the economic upgrading of firms and social upgrading of workers. We will employ both secondary research and primary research methods for our data collection. Empirically, we will employ both qualitative and quantitative methods to answer the research questions.
