Welcome to the Website of the Department of Educational Science!

The Department of Educational Science is one of the four departments under the umbrella of the Faculty of Human Sciences (FB 01). It was created by the reorganization of the university’s general structure in 2011. The Department, which embraces a total of 11 professorships, provides a solid framework for work undertaken in various fields, which includes general educational theory, empirical educational research, psychoanalysis, and the study of school education. The teaching concentrates on processes of situational, social and reflexive learning. Most courses are part of the core educational and social science curriculum for the teacher training programs. There are also courses available for the Master's Program in Empirical Educational Research.

The department’s research interests include explorations of issues in the fields of educational justice, policy reform, university and adult learning and educational interaction. In addition, processes of teaching and learning at school, and the role of peers during those processes, are also important components. Various methods are used for this work. In the context of a practice teaching program, the department maintains numerous contacts with schools in the region of Northern Hesse; further partnerships have been established through research projects focusing on school development, instructional quality and learning interaction. Furthermore, an innovative form of research-based collaboration is being developed together with experimental schools in the city of Kassel (Reformschule Kassel and Offene Schule Waldau).
