The construction sector consumes an enormous amount of energy and raw materials worldwide and at the same time is responsible for a significant share of the emissions and waste associated with it. Against the backdrop of a growing world population, increasing resource scarcity and advancing climate change, this development is associated with serious consequences for the economy, ecology and society. Accordingly, in terms of the circular economy, there is a need to question current building practices and to increasingly consider recyclable building materials in planning.
Compared to other building materials, clay is available worldwide, is ecologically harmless, and also has ideal building-physical properties. Thanks to its moisture-regulating and heat-storing material properties, air-dried clay promotes a comfortable indoor climate and can also be recycled many times. In terms of structural engineering, clay as a solid building material is also ideally suited to absorbing compressive stresses and, thanks to approval in fire class A1 [non-combustible], offers the possibility of ensuring increased fire resistance.
In relation to the 50th anniversary of the Department 06 ASL, the seminar builds on the extensive work of Gernot Minke, with the aim of consciously and permanently reintegrating the subject of earth building within teaching at the University of Kassel, as well as conveying the content to students in as practical a manner as possible.
The goal is the theoretical and practical examination of traditional and modern manufacturing processes in earthen construction for the formation of different wall and ceiling systems through the formulation and implementation of 1:1 prototypes on the campus of the University of Kassel.
The seminar is basically divided into two phases. The first phase is supervised by the Department of Structural Design and focuses on the theoretical basic teaching of the history and material properties of the building material, as well as the general teaching of traditional and modern wall and ceiling systems and with in this context different manufacturing processes.
Within the second phase, the focus is on the practical implementation of the theoretically imparted contents by means of manual engagement with the building material. In addition to the examination and evaluation of own clay samples as well as the possibilities of preparation by means of test procedures, the direct gain of knowledge by realization of simple wall and ceiling modules is in the center of attention. For the implementation as a workshop within the compact week, the Kassel-based company ErdHandwerk is called in with the support of external specialists.
