Curriculum Vitae

Jan Marco Leimeister is a German university professor for business information systems and is the Chair for Information Systems at Kassel University, Germany since 2008. He is furthermore a professor at the Insititute of Information Management, University of St. Gallen, Switzerland since 2012.

He studied business administration with a focus on business information systems at the University of Hohenheim, where he also received a doctorate with distinction in the area of business information systems on the topic ‘systematic development, implementation and operation of virtual communities’.

Between 2004 and 2008, Jan Marco Leimeister worked at the Technische Universitaet Muenchen, Munich, Institute for Informatics , as assistant professor. In 2008 he earned his postdoctoral lecture qualification (Habilitation) with a work on hybrid value creation in healthcare management.

In 2008, Leimeister accepted an appointment as full professor at Kassel University. He holds the Chair for Business Information Systems at Kassel University and is Director of the Research Centre for Information Systems Design ITeG. He heads research groups on mobile/ ubiquitous computing, e-health, service and collaboration engineering, IT strategy & management and is responsible for various projects financed by federal and state governments as well as by industry, e.g. VENUS (designing technical-social networks in situational ubiquitous systems, promoted as part of the Excellence Initiative in the state of Hessen), GENIE (community-based innovation development for software companies, promoted by BMBF), Mobil50+ (innovative IT-based service provision concepts for mobile living and activity at 50+, promoted by BMBF). He is also active at the Munich Competence Center eHealth (MCCeH) and SFB 768 “Cycle Management of Innovation Processes” of the German Research Foundation (DFG) as a project manager.

Leimeister's fields of research cover IT strategy (especially IT in Mergers&Acquisitions, Carve Outs, etc.), Virtual Communities, e-health, ubiquitous/ mobile computing, hybrid value creation (bundling products and service), IT innovation management, service engineering and management as well as computer supported cooperative work.

The German Journal "Handelsblatt" ranks Jan Marco Leimeister on position 31 among the most actively researching business administration professors in Germany (monitoring 2012 researchers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland) based on his publications in the last five years, and seven among the most published researchers below the age of 40.

Leimeister was awarded

  • the Hessen University Prize for Excellence in Teaching 2009 for his teaching achievements 
  • the TUM Research Excellence Award in Innovation and Leadership in 2010.
