Paula Stephan comes to Kassel
One of the world's leading economists of science comes to Kassel. Paula Stephan, Professor of Economics at Georgia State University and Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, will be the guest speaker of the Economics Faculty Seminar on Wednesday, June 6 (4.30-6.00 pm in the Senatssaal). Her talk is titled "Mobile Scientists and Productivity: Evidence from GlobSci." The seminar is open to the public; guests are welcome.
Paula Stephan has written extensively about scientists' motivations and career trajectories, academic labor markets, immigration, as well as on technology transfer and the geography of innovation. Her new book "How Economics Shapes Science" has been published by Harvard University Press in 2012. As a member of various high-level policy advisory bodies in the U.S. and in Europe, Paula Stephan is also actively involved in the design of science policies.

IIDEOS Doctoral Colloquium with Koen Frenken
Koen Frenken (TU Eindhoven) is the keynote speaker of the IIDEOS doctoral colloquium hosted by the Economic Policy Research Group on April 26, 2012. IIDEOS (short for: Innovation, Industrial Dynamics, Entrepreneurship, Organisation and Space) is a joint initiative of several research groups in geography, economics and management at the Universities of Marburg and Kassel. Research professorship at IWH
The IWH (Halle Institute of Economic Research) has appointed Guido Buenstorf to a research professorship. With this appointment the ongoing collaboration in various projects related to innovation and industrial dynamics is institutionalized. University of Kassel students will also benefit: an excursion to the IWH will be part of the course on Economics of Demographic Change offered in the Summer Term.
Associate Editorship at Industrial and Corporate Change
Guido Buenstorf has assumed an associate editorship at Industrial and Corporate Change (ICC). ICC is a leading scholarly journal in the field of industrial dynamics, innovation studies and organization theory. Contributions to ICC draw from an interdisciplinary set of approaches including economics, management studies, sociology of organization, political science, and social psychology. ICC is highly ranked in both economics and management and currently has an impact factor of 1.235 (5-year impact factor: 2.330).
Norman Vogt Predicts Regional Shortage of Educated Workers
Almost half of the jobs for university-educated workers may not be filled in the Kassel region by 2019. This is the key finding of Normal Vogt's final thesis, which studied regional effects of demographic changes. (University of Kassel press release (in German))
Stefan Krabel: Finalist of the DRUID Doctoral Dissertation Award
Stefan Krabel was one of the three finalists of the 2010-2011 DRUID Doctoral Dissertation Award. He defended his dissertation titled "Commercializing Basic Science - Scientist Motivation for Knowledge Transfer to the Public Sector" in 2010.
The DRUID Doctoral Dissertation Award was awarded to Christopher Liu, who defended his dissertation in 2010 at Harvard University. The DRUID (short for: Danish Research Unit for Industrial Dynamics) is one of Europe's leading research consortia in the field of industrial dynamics.
Study on Akron Cluster Wins Stephan Schrader Award
Guido Buenstorf and Steven Klepper (Carnegie Mellon University) are the winners of the 2010 Stephan-Schrader-Preis – Munich Best Paper Award in Entrepreneurship Research. They receive the award for their article "Heritage and Agglomeration: The Akron Tyre Cluster Revisited" highlighting the importance of employee entrepreneurship for the evolution of regional industry clusters (The Economic Journal, 119 (April 2009): 705-733).
