Development of minimum requirements for the rearing of
laying hens regarding minimisation of feather and vent pecking during the
laying period of hens kept in free-range and barn systems based on an
epidemiological study
Although many factors, that promote the development and the occurrence of
feather and vent pecking are well known, these behavioural disturbances are
still major problems in alternative systems for laying hens. To verify the
influence of the rearing conditions on the occurrence of feather and vent
pecking during the laying period data have been collected and plumage and skin
condition of hens has been scored on 50 rearing units and two subsequent laying
hen units in Germany and Austria. Aim of the project is to compile a catalogue
stating minimum requirements for the rearing of laying hens that lead to a
considerable minimisation of feather and vent pecking during the laying period.
The requirements will be ranked regarding their significance and they will be
assessed regarding possibility of realisation and economy. The requirements
shall be valid as recommendations for farmers and for the further development
of the Tierschutz-Nutztierhaltungsverordnung. The
compilation of the catalogue will be based on an epidemiological study of
on-farm conditions at rearing units with regard to risk factors for feather and
vent pecking as well as on a literature study and on expert-opinion.
