Ariane Goetz studied political science, philosophy and German literature in Berlin, Aix-en-Provence, Nanjing and Waterloo. She holds a PhD in Global Governance from the Balsillie School of International Affairs/Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada. Her research focuses on the international political economy and governance of agrarian environmental transformations at the intersection of sustainability governance, international organization, global restructuring and national development. Particular areas of interest are land, (sustainable) food & agriculture, and bioenergy. For instance, her thesis analyzed the global phenomenon “land grabbing” from the viewpoint of two investor countries, assessing how and why Chinese and British investors engage in highly risky enterprises abroad, and explaining the ways in which they are part of the political economies at home, in the target countries, and internationally (Transcript, Land Grabbing and Home Country Development, 2019). Previous research includes the role of natural resources in sustainability and climate governance, land use, the sustainability of bioenergy, and environmental and social dynamics of economic transformation.  Ariane has worked in (inter)national, inter- and transdisciplinary research projects, policy-science-society interface work and development cooperation, including the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS), Centre for International Governance Innovations (CIGI), Hertie School of Governance, and GIZ. At the University of Kassel, Ariane studies the international political economy and governance of sustainability of agriculture. She also teaches in the Bachelor and Master modules.
