At the cross point of farm animal behaviour and animal husbandry we especially work on the assessment of animal welfare and on possibilities to improve welfare.

Consequently, our research priorities are as follows:

  • Methods of welfare assessment
  • Analysis of the influence of housing conditions and management on the behaviour and health of dairy cows
  • Analysis of the influence of housing conditions and management, especially during the early ontogeny, on feather pecking and cannibalism of poultry
  • Analysis of potentials to improve animal welfare, especially through environmental enrichment and the consideration of aspects of social behaviour

We teach:

  • Contents and methods of applied farm animal ethology.
  • Aspects of animal husbandry as regards construction, technology, and economy.
  • Ethical and legal aspects of animal welfare.
