Christian heads the Management in the International Food Industry unit on the Witzenhausen campus. He held academic positions at the Leuphana University Lüneburg and the University of Nottingham before joining Nottingham Trent University as Professor in Business and Sustainability. His research and teaching interests have also taken him to the Asia-Pacific region. He was Visiting Research Fellow at the University of South Australia, and stayed for more than one year in South-East Asia (Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam) where he carried out an international capacity development and research project on environmental management accounting and resource efficiency. During his stay in the Emilia Romagna region of Italy he carried out a management project on the implementation of an ISO14001 environmental management system. Short-term academic appointments include visiting lectureships at the Free University Berlin, Germany, the University of Basel, Switzerland,  the Marmara University, Turkey, and ISARA, Lyon. Christian holds a PhD in Economic and Social Sciences, an MA in in Business Administration and an MSc in Environmental Sciences.

Research interests

Responsible and sustainable agriculture and food business; social and environmental accountability and strategy; accounting, reporting and control for sustainability; discourses on corporate social ir/responsibility.

Christian has taught on management and sustainability topics for a wide range of programmes, including International Business (MSc), Management Studies (BA, MSc), Accounting and Finance (BA, MSc), Corporate Social Responsibility (MSc, MBA, Executive), Environmental/ Sustainability Sciences (BSc, MSc), International Food Business and Consumer Studies (MSc), Sustainable International Agriculture (MSc) and a wide range of other courses in the field. He was Programme Director of the international MSc in Corporate Social Responsibility at the University of Nottingham and lectured on international programmes in Germany, the UK, and Turkey. Between 2004 and 2008, Christian developed and carried out a blended learning programme on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through InWEnt - Capacity Building International (now GIZ) for more than 1,400 participants from South-East Asia. The project was recognised as an "Education for Sustainable Development" Decade project by the German Commission for UNESCO for its knowledge transfer through case study research and teaching.
