Introduction on Substructure testing

The method of substructure testing is to divide the entire structural system into an experimental part and a numerical part. In a substructure test, the experimental part is tested by actuators and coupled in real-time with a numerical model. Thus, only critical components are tested economically under realistic load conditions and the response of whole structure can be investigated. 

By using the substructure test method, most objects in civil engineering, mechanical engineering and aerospace engineering can be tested in a truly dynamic manner without the need of testing entire structural systems.

Nowadays, research on substructure testing is conducted by many organizations in the world. Equipment for substructure testing is divers and ranges from small devices for investigating models to shaking tables for testing large-scale substructures. There are many projects researching substructure testing in earthquake engineering, car production and aerospace engineering.
