Top: Overexpression of the vacuolin oligomerisation domain removes endogenous vacuolin from the endosome membrane.
Left: Four cells expressing truncated vacuolin at different levels. Drag mouse over image to see that only the weakest cell (lower center) shows typical rings of endogenous vacuolin. In the other cells vacuolin becomes dispersed in the cytoplasm.
Function: Oligomerisation provides strong target affinity to otherwise weakly binding PHB domains as in mammalian flotillin.
