Christoph Scherrer

Lebenslauf

Ich wurde in Frankfurt am Main geboren und machte dort auch mein Abitur, nachdem ich in den USA als Austauschschüler das Highschool-Diploma erwarb.

Zwischen Abitur und Zivildienst in den USA als Community-Organizer ließ ich mich zum Bankkaufmann ausbilden. Ich schloss das Studium in Frankfurt mit einem Diplom in Volkswirtschaft ab und wechselte danach zur Politologie über, wo ich mich 1989 bei Prof. Esser mit einer regulationstheoretischen Arbeit über die US-Auto- und Stahlindustrie promovierte.

Anschließend lehrte und forschte ich als Wissenschaftlicher Assistent bei Prof. Mayer am J. F. Kennedy-Institut der Freien Universität Berlin. Während dieser Assistenz war ich als Hewlett Scholar an der Wesleyan University und als Visiting Scholar an der Yale University, lehrte an der Rutgers University in Newark ein Semester und freute mich über ein J. F. Kennedy-Memorial Fellowship an der Harvard University.

1999 habilitierte ich mich mit der Schrift „Weltmarkt als Projekt? Durchsetzung liberaler Außenwirtschaftspolitik in den USA, 1960-1998“ am Fachbereich Politik- und Sozialwissenschaften der Freien Universität Berlin.

Nach einer Vertretungsprofessur an der Universität Gesamthochschule Kassel, einer Gastprofessur an der Fachhochschule für Wirtschaft, Berlin und einer Forscherstelle am Wissenschaftszentrum für Sozialforschung in Berlin erhielt ich 2000 den Ruf an die Universität Kassel für das neue Fachgebiet „Globalisierung & Politik”.

Im Jahre 2003 startete der englischsprachige Masterstudiengang Global Political Economy, für den wir 2007 den Preis „Exzellenz in der Lehre“ des Hessischen Ministeriums für Wissenschaft und Kunst erhielten.

2003 gewannen wir zudem zusammen mit der Fachhochschule für Wirtschaft in Berlin die Ausschreibung für den Masterstudiengang Labour Policies and Globalisation.

Seither betreibe ich die weitere internationale Vernetzung des Fachgebiets "Globalisierung & Politik", und zwar insbesondere im Rahmen des Global-Labor-University-Netzwerkes und des EU-Exzellenznetzwerkes GARNET. Die Teilnahme an der jährlich stattfindenden Kasseler Sommerakademie zur Gestaltung der Weltwirtschaft steht allen Interessierten offen.
Zunächst als Studiendekan und später als Dekan des Fachbereichs Gesellschaftswissenschaften setzte ich mich für die Umsetzung des Bologna-Prozesses ein. Nach der Umstellung auf BA- und MA-Studiengänge entstand  2007 am Fachbereich das Kasseler Internationale Graduiertenzentrum Gesellschaftswissenschaften (KIGG), das Angebote für ein strukturierteres Promotionsstudium bereithält. Gleichfalls ging 2007 das von den Stiftungen Hans-Böckler und Heinrich-Böll finanzierte Promotionskolleg Global Social Policies and Governance an denStart, das ich zusammen mit Prof. Burchardt leite.

Barbara Dickhaus

Barbara Dickhaus graduated in Economic Geography and Sociology at the University of Hamburg in 2001 and received a scholarship from the Heinrich Böll Foundation for her studies since 1998. In 2003 she attained a Master of Science in ‘Development Management’ at the London School of Economics and Political Science, with a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Programme (DAAD). Since September 2004 Barbara Dickhaus is academic staff member at the University of Kassel at the Department of Social Sciences. From 2004 until 2006 she was co-ordinator of an international project, the Global Labour University, in co-operation with the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the Friedrich-Ebert- and Hans-Böckler-Foundation. Since November 2006 she is research and teaching associate in the field of ‘Globalisation and Politics’.
She works on governance of public services, with a focus on reforms in public service provision in the European Union, especially in the field of higher education services and energy/electricity services. This includes the issue of trade in services and the links between national, EU/regional and multilateral reforms and agreements (e.g. GATS). Her PhD research deals with reforms of governance structures in higher education, with reference to case studies in Chile and South Africa. Her main research and teaching interests are political economy, governance of services, privatisation and development studies.

Thomas Dürmeier

Thomas Dürmeier graduated in Economics at the University of Regensburg in 2003 and received a scholarship from the Catholic Scholarship Programme 'Cusanuswerk' for his studies in Political Science and Economics since 1999. In 2000 he took part in the Masters programme of the University of Colorado at Boulder. Since November 2007 Thomas Dürmeier is academic staff member at the University of Kassel at the Department of Social Sciences and is now research and teaching associate in the field of 'Globalisation and Politics'. His research interests are global political economics, corporate political power, post autistic economics and labour standards in international trade. He
is doing his PhD on the conceptualization of political power of transnational corporations in the economic theories of global political economy.

Miriam Heigl

Miriam Heigl is a post-doctoral research associate in the social sciences department at the University of Kassel. She holds the ‘Diplôme d’Études Européennes’ from the Nouvelle Sorbonne (Paris, France, 1999) and a Master of Arts in political sciences, macroeconomics and sociology from the Ludwig-Maximilians-University (Munich, Germany, 2002). After her studies she worked with a Non-Governmental Organization for two years doing public relations and solidarity work for Central America and Mexico. From 2004 until 2008 she received a scholarship from the Hans-Böckler-Foundation and worked on her PhD thesis on ‘Privatisation, state and resistance’. Currently she is coordinating the international steering committee of the Global Labour University Network and working in a research project on ‘social clauses in public procurement’. Her main fields of interest are: political economy, state theory, public procurement, privatisation and union activities.

Dr. Christine Löw

Christine Löw is lecturer in the field of globalization & politics and international relations at the Political Science Department/University of Kassel.
She has studied political science, philosophy, law and sociology at the J.W.Goethe-University in Frankfurt a.M. and graduated in political science in 2000. From 2002-2005 she was a doctoral fellow at the DFG-Graduiertenkolleg 'Public Spheres and Gender Relations. Dimensions of Experience' and received her PhD in 2007. In her dissertation "Women from the Third World and Epistemic Critique? The Postcolonial Approaches of Gayatri C. Spivak on Globalization and the Production of Theory" she analyzes how the insights of postcolonial feminism can be read together with recent globalization theories. In particular, she investigates the actual meaning of marxist thoughts, the role of intellectuals, the appropriation of the rural and female reproductivity and human rights discourse. Her main fields of interest are: feminist and (post-)marxist theories, postcolonial studies, global justice and political theory. She is currently working on a research project on property rights.

Dr. Helen Schwenken

Helen Schwenken is Assistant Professor in the field of “Globalization & Politics” at the Department for Social Sciences and is member of the Interdisciplinary Working Group on Women and Gender Studies at the University of Kassel, Germany.
She graduated in Social Sciences at Bochum University (1999). In 2000 she was member of the faculty at the International women’s university (ifu) in the Project Area Migration, Hanover. From 2001-2003, she has been member of the PhD programme “Gender Democracy and Organizational Change in a Global Context” the Universities of Bochum and Bielefeld. Her PhD thesis examined the ways how undocumented migrants organize themselves in the European Union although the EU aims at combating irregular migration ("Rechtlos, aber nicht ohne Stimme. Politische Mobilisierungen um irreguläre Migration in die Europäische Union", Bielefeld: transcript, 2006). Since 2006 she serves in the management committee of the European "Network of Excellence on Global Governance, Regionalisation and Regulation: The Role of the EU (GARNET)". She is also member of the editorial team of the journal „Peripherie. Politik und Ökonomie in der Dritten Welt“.
Her main fields of interest are migration studies, feminist and gender studies and social movements. Her current research project focuses on the modes of knowledge production in international migration policies.
