Das Fachgebiet Stadtentwicklungsplanung und Stadtmanagement befasst sich mit Theorien, Methoden, Verfahren (formelle und informelle) und den sich verändernden Planungsaufgaben bei der räumlichen Entwicklung von Städten und Gemeinden. Die Raum- und Siedlungsentwicklung wird in enger Wechselwirkung zum gesellschaftlichen Strukturwandel und den Veränderungen der lokalen und überörtlichen Politiken untersucht. Großprojekte, handlungsorientierte Entwicklungskonzepte und strategische Planungen werden nicht als Alternativen, sondern in ihrer sich unterstützenden Wirkung für die nachhaltige Entwicklung der Städte und Stadtregionen behandelt. Handlungsorientierte Planungs- und Entscheidungsprozesse erfordern die Kooperation und Kommunikation mit unterschiedlichen städtischen und stadt-regionalen Akteuren. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt des Fachgebietes liegt deshalb in der Vermittlung und Untersuchung neuer Formen und Methoden von Quartiers-, Stadtteil- und Stadtmanagement.
Innerhalb des Forschungsverbundes "Strategien zur Bewältigung des Strukturwandels in europäischen Städten und Regionen" der Universität Kassel arbeitet das Fachgebiet Stadtentwicklungsplanung und Stadtmanagement am Forschungsprojekt "Städtische Transformationsprozesse zwischen Moderne und Nachmoderne: Kassel, Magdeburg, Coventry, Rotterdam und Szczecin im Vergleich".

Department of Urban Development and Urban Management
The Department of Urban Development and Urban Management deals with theories, methods, procedures (formal as well as informal) and the varying tasks of planning that focus on the spatial development of cities and municipalities. The development of spaces and the built environment is examined in close connection with societal structural change and the changes in local and trans-regional policies. By rejecting the common assumption that large projects, action-oriented development schemes and strategic planning drafts are mutually exclusive alternatives the department treats them as mutually supportive approaches aimed at promoting the sustainable development of cities and urban regions. The department is in particular concerned with the cooperation and communication among different actors in processes of planning, decision-making and urban management.
Within the research cluster “Strategies for dealing with structural change in European cities and regions” at Kassel University the Department of Urban Development and Urban Management engages in the research project “Transforming the Modern City – The case studies of Kassel, Rotterdam, Coventry, Magdeburg and Szczecin” (for details see Dept. of Urban Renewal/Urban Conversion)
