Course: Micro- and Nanomechanics

Contents

The lecture discusses the mechanical behaviour of crystalline materials on a small size scale starting from dislocation mechanics. Some micromechanical measurement methods as well as the current theories on size effects in plasticity are presented.

Measurement methods:

  •     Microtensile tests
  •     Micro compression tests
  •     In-situ electron microscopy
  •     Thin film methods

Size effects:

  •     Strength in single crystals
  •     Strength in polycrystals
  •     Strain rate dependence
  •     Fracture toughness
  •     Fatigue
  •     Indentation effect
