DSH Language Examination - TestDaF

The information on this page is designed for international applicants required to pass the DSH German Language Examination before beginning a degree course.

You will NOT be required to take the DSH examination if:

    • you are required to attend the preparatory college (Studienkolleg) before beginning your degree course
    • you have applied for a postgraduate course for which the DSH is not required (for further details, see the information on postgraduate degree programmes)
    • you are an exchange student or are taking part in a scholarship programme
    • you are applying for doctoral studies
    • you have passed the TestDaf examination at the required level (see below)

The DSH examination at the University of Kassel may be taken only by applicants

    • have been admitted to study at the University of Kassel and
    • hold a certificate of German proficiency equivalent to the Mittelstufe (mid-level) as defined by the Goethe Institute, OR have participated in at least 800 hours of instruction in German at a secondary school or university

    DSH Examination Dates

    • late March/early April for the summer semester
    • late September/early October for the winter semester

The University of Kassel admission letter will contain further details and exact dates.

In the case of an unsuccessful (failed) DSH examination, the following semester is the earliest possible date to re-sit the exam.

To support you in better preparing for the DSH examination, the University of Kassel offers German Language Classes.   It is also possible to take part in German classes through a private language school in Kassel.

    DSH Proficiency Levels

The DSH examination results correspond to three proficiency levels: DSH-1, DSH-2 and DSH-3. In order to qualify for your degree course, you must pass at the DSH-2 level or higher. Applicants for art courses (Free Art, Visual Communication, Product Design) must pass at the DSH-1 level or higher.

More information on the DSH examination is available from the Language Centre (Sprachenzentrum).

It is also possible to take a TestDaF examination (in a TestDaF centre in your home country), in place of the DSH examination.

If you have passed the TestDaF examination at level 4 (in the four obligatory exam sections) before travelling to Kassel, you will not be required to take the DSH examination. Applicants for art courses (Free Art, Visual Communication, Product Design) must pass the TestDaf examination at level 3 in the four obligatory exam sections.

Please consult the Test-DaF institute webpage www.testdaf.de for more information.
