In the article "Statistical Analysis of Pairwise Connectivity", Georg Krempl, Daniel Kottke and Tuan Pham present the method "Analysis of the Connectivity of spiking Events (ACE)". ACE is used to detect connections between pairs of neurons based on hypothesis testing. Using spike trains, a distribution is determined that models the distribution of latencies between two consecutive spikes of two uncorrelated neurons. Using the chi-squared test statistic, the deviation of the observed and the expected distribution is measured. Based on this test statistic, ACE decides whether the pair of neurons is connected.
