Claude Draude is Professor of Participatory IT Design at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences , and director of the Research Center for Information System Design (ITeG) at the University of Kassel. Claude Draude served in an advisory capacity during the establishment of the Kassel Institute for Sustainability.

Claude Draude's work is highly interdisciplinary and shaped by her academic career, which combines media studies, cultural studies, and sociology with computer science research and development.

Her research focuses on how information technology design can enable and promote social justice and social participation.

In the fields of human-computer interaction, socio-informatics, and computer science and society, she combines theoretical foundations with design research, empirical work, and methodological development. Thematically, she deals with participatory and socio-technical design, digital participation and access to computer science, social bias in AI, intersectional gender studies and diversity, new materialist approaches in human-computer interaction, and design and artistic research.

Claude Draude co-founded the “Participation" work group at the Human-Computer Interaction section of the German Informatics Society (GI e.V.). Claude Draude was a member of the scientific commission for the Third Gender Equality Report with a focus on digitalisation, appointed by the German federal government.

Participatory approaches in human-computer interaction traditionally center around the co-creation of digital systems and on the empowerment of lay users. This position paper sets a different focus and reframes participation as a means of access to design itself. Hence, it is not about designing technologies, but about reflecting on how to create conditions under which marginalized groups — specifically young women — can access computer science education. The paper is motivated by a current research project that seeks to increase young women's interest in studying computer science (CS). Situated within the broader goal of diversifying the field of computing, the research project interrogates how digital fabrication and didactic reconstruction approaches to CS education could support increased representation of women in CS study programs. What we present here is not so much about the didactical approaches as such but a reflection on the broader setup of the project through the lens of intersectional gender research and the question of participation.

The goal of this studio is to explore and discuss the potential benefits and the open challenges of giving a physical form to Artificial Intelligence (AI), towards the definition of tangible, or graspable AI. In this studio, we want to carry out a hands-on exploration of the potential of tangible interaction to help people grasp how transformer-based AI models, such as Large Language Models (LLMs), make predictions. Starting from a basic understanding of the core mechanisms of these models – input/output embedding, positional encoding, self-attention, and multi-head attention, we will explore how tangible interaction properties, such as data physicalization and tangible manipulation, may help designing graspable interfaces for facilitating the understanding and control of LLMs. Fostering AI transparency and human agency, we believe that tangible interaction may help increase the trustworthiness of Large Language Models. Through brainstorming and prototyping activities, we aim at identifying effective tangible representations and manipulation techniques that will help users grasp and trust LLMs.

The field of digital journalism is facing multifaceted crises posed by the phenomenon of platformization. We interpret this platformization as a critical juncture and investigate how different actors address the associated challenges, focusing on processes of value mediation. To do so, we compare two German journalism start-ups and a mainstream publisher. Our study introduces a pragmatistic theoretical framework using three approaches of cooperative value mediation (or “co-valuation”) – pricing, design, and cultivation – as an analytical as well as normative tool. On the one hand, results show that niche players exhibit a tendency for autonomy from prevailing structural conditions, underlined by a collective “value commitment”, although the strategies for mediating values can differ significantly. On the other hand, established players perceive themselves as subject to deterministic influences, hindering the cultivation of enduring value loyalties. The analysis thus also highlights the role of the sociotechnical ecosystem in shaping value mediation, emphasizing the utility of the co-valuation approaches.

Ausgehend von der Beobachtung, dass gegenwärtige Herausforderungen der Datenökonomie neben der angemessenen Verwendung von Daten auch Aspekte der gerechten Verteilung von Erlösen, die Manipulation durch Algorithmen oder die Beeinflussung der politischen Meinungsbildung durch Plattformen betreffen, lotet das vorliegende White Paper Möglichkeiten der fairen Gestaltung datenökonomischer Geschäftsmodelle aus. Die erarbeiteten Instrumente und Analysen zur Unterstützung einer fairen Geschäftsmodellgestaltung basieren auf Ergebnissen des vom BMBF geförderten Projekts „Faire digitale Dienste: Ko-Valuation in der Gestaltung datenökonomischer Geschäftsmodelle (FAIRDIENSTE)“. Um ein analytisch gehaltvolles Fairness-Verständnis zu entwickeln, das auch für die konkrete datenökonomische Gestaltungspraxis innovative und wirtschaftlich tragfähige Alternativen zu gegenwärtigen Geschäftsmodellen freizulegen vermag, wurden in FAIRDIENSTE verschiedene Ansätze der kooperativen Wertvermittlung (im Folgenden auch „Ko-Valuation“) erprobt, die wir als Verrechnung, Design und Kultivierung bezeichnen: Erstens wurde untersucht, inwiefern sich unterschiedliche Werte in eine ökonomische Sprache der Preise übersetzen und fair verrechnen lassen (Verrechnung). Drittens wurde geprüft, inwiefern die öffentliche Aushandlung von Wertkonflikten, z.B. über Social-Media-Elemente, gefördert werden kann, um zu einer Kultur der Fairness unter den Nutzerinnen und Nutzern beizutragen (Kultivierung). Diese Perspektiven wurden anhand der Fairness-Herausforderungen des digitalen Journalismus geschärft und auf ihre Tragfähigkeit geprüft. Darüber hinaus beanspruchen die folgenden Überlegungen und Instrumente zur fairen Geschäftsmodellgestaltung aber auch auf andere gesellschaftliche Domänen anwendbar zu sein.

With our work, we contribute towards a qualitative analysis of the discourse on controversies in online news media. For this, we employ Formal Concept Analysis and the economics of conventions to derive conceptual controversy maps. In our experiments, we analyze two maps from different news journals with methods from ordinal data science. We show how these methods can be used to assess the diversity, complexity and potential bias of controversies. In addition to that, we discuss how the diagrams of concept lattices can be used to navigate between news articles.

This field of tension, between empowerment and threat of amplifying inequalities, is explored in this contribution. Moreover, this chapter views digital humanism through the lens of intersectional gender research. After discussing the historic relation between gender and humanism, concepts and terminology of gender research and feminist theory are explained in more detail. Following this, the interaction of gender and technology is illustrated through examples. Finally, the lessons learned part contains suggestions and calls for action important for a more inclusive and equitable digital transformation.

@article{Horn_2024, abstract = {In the data economy digital services of democratic value such as news platforms are embedded into unjust power imbalances and the intertwining of economic and civic objectives. The authors argue, to design proficient democratic digital services, power structures of the data economy and empowerment stages of data citizenship need to be made visible initially. To do so, a combination of Arnstein’s ‘Ladder of Citizen Participation’ and Rocha’s ‘Ladder of Empowerment’ is translated into the field of the data economy. A small interview study with niche actors from the field of online journalism is conducted to identify phenomena of their embedding into the sociotechnical landscape of the data economy. As a result, the Ladder of Data Citizen Participation is presented. Contemporary automation through AI entails a substantial amount of behind-the-scenes human labour, which is often both invisibilised and underpaid. Since invisible labour, including labelling and maintenance work, is an integral part of contemporary AI systems, it remains important to sensitise users to its role. We suggest that this could be done through explainable AI (XAI) design, particularly feminist intersectional XAI. We propose the method of cartography, which stems from feminist intersectional research, to draw out a systemic perspective of AI and include dimensions of AI that pertain to invisible labour.

This paper presents a series of feminist epistemological concepts as tools for developing critical, more accountable, and contextualised approaches to machine learning systems design. Namely, we suggest that the methods of situated knowledges or situating, figurations or figuring, diffraction or diffracting, and critical fabulation or speculation can be productively actualised in the field of machine learning systems design. We also suggest that the meta-method for doing this actualisation requires not so much translation but transposition - a creative and critical adaptation to speak to machine learning contexts.

Current approaches to the design and development of digital business models (DBMs) overlook the multiple, and sometimes conflicting, logics of actors with which the focal firm seeks to co-create value. The lack of integrating stakeholders’ logics into DBMs has potentially detrimental and unintended ethical and social consequences. By collaboratively conducting an action research project with a digital publisher and drawing on participatory and value-sensitive design principles, we develop a novel approach for designing DBMs that integrates actors’ multiple logics by design. We contribute to literature by introducing a new approach highlighting DBMs’ inherent social aspects and furthering our understanding of multiple logics’ role in DBMs. Practitioners gain a concrete DBM design method preempting conflict.

By collaboratively conducting an action research project with a digital publisher and drawing on participatory and value-sensitive design principles, we develop a novel approach for designing DBMs that integrates actors’ multiple logics by design. This paper follows calls for critical approaches to computing and conceptualisations of intersectional, feminist, decolonial HCI and AI design and asks what a feminist intersectional perspective in HCXAI research and design might look like. Sketching out initial research directions and implications for explainable AI design, it suggests that explainability from a feminist perspective would include the fostering of response-ability - the capacity to critically evaluate and respond to AI systems - and would centre marginalised perspectives.

A systemic, sustainable impact of diversity measures on informatics is still largely missing. In this paper I explore what working with diversity and gender concepts in informatics entails, what the main challenges are and provide thoughts for improvement. Die Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) der Vereinten Nationen streben anhand von SDG 5 danach, die Gleichheit der Geschlechter im globalen Kontext herzustellen. Wir zeigen, dass der aktuelle, global angelegte Nachhaltigkeitsdiskurs nicht nur blinde Flecken im Hinblick auf die konsequente Bekämpfung geschlechtsspezifischer Ungleichheiten aufweist, sondern auch einen wenig reflektierten Umgang mit der digitalen Transformation pflegt. Mögliche Ansätze zur Bewältigung des identifizierten Spannungsfeldes sehen wir in einer gendersensiblen IT-Gestaltung, einem digitalen Gleichstellungsgesetz und der konsequenten Bewertung von Folgen der globalen Nachhaltigkeitspolitik und -forschung im Hinblick auf Diskriminierung.

Participation in the data economy is prone to unjust power imbalances. Individuals function as mere data sources and are left out of decisions on how, when, and where personal data is accumulated and processed. In this paper, we translate Arnsteins' `Ladder of Citizen Participation' to the field of the data economy to offer a conceptual lens to tackle power imbalances' underlying structures. For this, we derived assumptions from the application's ecosystem. We propose to encase the lowest rungs of the ladder with the term of involuntary participation and frame individuals as digital Citizens to avoid a mere focus on the economic dimension of participation. Building on this, we translate the eight rungs of Arnstein's original ladder to the new application field of the data economy through examples and design affordances corresponding with differing degrees of digital citizens' data agency. Eventually, we contemplate implications for socio-technical design resulting from the re-conceptualization of the `ladder' and formulate future research.

Participatory Design means recognizing that those who will be affected by a future technology should have an active say in its creation. Yet, despite continuous interest in involving people as future users and consumers into designing novel and innovative future technology, participatory approaches in technology design remain relatively underdeveloped in the German HCI community. This article brings together the diversity of voices, domains, perspectives, approaches, and methods that collectively shape Participatory Design in Germany. In the following, we (1) outline our understanding of participatory practice and how it is different from mere user involvement; (2) reflect current issues of participatory and fair technology design within the German Participatory Design community; and (3) discuss tensions relevant to the field, that we expect to arise in the future, and which we derived from our 2021 workshop through a speculative method. We contribute an introduction and an overview of current themes and a speculative outlook on future issues of Participatory Design in Germany. It is meant to inform, provoke, inspire and, ultimately, invite participation within the wider Computer Science community.

Yet, despite continuous interest in involving people as future users and consumers into designing novel and innovative future technology, participatory approaches in technology design remain relatively underdeveloped in the German HCI community. This article brings together the diversity of voices, domains, perspectives, approaches, and methods that collectively shape Participatory Design in Germany. In the following, we (1) outline our understanding of participatory practice and how it is different from mere user involvement; (2) reflect current issues of participatory and fair technology design within the German Participatory Design community; and (3) discuss tensions relevant to the field, that we expect to arise in the future, and which we derived from our 2021 workshop through a speculative method. We contribute an introduction and an overview of current themes and a speculative outlook on future issues of Participatory Design in Germany. It is meant to inform, provoke, inspire and, ultimately, invite participation within the wider Computer Science community.

It does so by presenting a case study of a series of speculative design workshops, conducted in 2021. These workshops drew on intersectional feminist methodologies to construct interdisciplinary interventions in the design of machine learning systems, towards more inclusive, accountable, and contextualized systems design. The concepts of “situating/situated knowledges”, "figuration", "diffraction", and “critical fabulation/speculation” were taken up as theoretical and methodological tools for concept-led design workshops. This chapter interrogates ``data justice'' through the lenses of feminist and legal studies to reconfigure data justice as a multidimensional, interdisciplinary practice in IT-design. First, we look at how data justice is framed in feminist research and feminist-informed critical data and design perspectives, as well as how it is conceptualised in law, particularly in the context of the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and legal debates around privacy in Europe. Second, we recommend conceptual shifts, design approaches, and legal measures towards data justice. Our chapter contributes to new perspectives in critical data studies by showing that data justice can provide a conceptual ground that serves both the needs of legal formalisation as well as feminist imperatives of contextualisation and specificity.

ICT can contribute to flexible working, but the question arises if women and men differ in the way they use ICT. Re-analyzing data collected in two diary studies comparing men and women on the length of ICT use, the type of positive and negative events in relation to ICT during the day, on the way home and in the evening, revealed little to no gender differences. We conclude that the occupational role overrides potential differences that might occur due to different gender roles and discuss future research opportunities in this area. For example, the question arises against the background of the gendered division of labor if occupational role and other factors determine ICT use, calling for an intersectional analysis.

This workshop draws on feminist and other critical methodologies to construct interdisciplinary interventions in the design of machine learning systems. Theoretical concepts of “figuration”, “situating/situated knowledge”, “critical fabulation/speculation,” and “diffraction” are explored through hands-on experimentation to imagine and design machine learning systems in a more situated, inclusive, contextualize and accountable way. Through this “theory turned practice” approach the workshop aims to address systemic socio-cultural biases and develop more socially responsible frameworks of design. The workshop provides space for building a network for future research on interdisciplinary machine learning systems design.

Seit Jahrzehnten wird die geschlechtliche Verteilung von Studierenden in MINT bzw. der Informatik aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven in den Blick genommen. Aus Sicht geschlechtertheoretischer Forschungen werden dafür unter anderem geschlechtliche Codierungen der Fächer gesehen, in denen sich alltägliches Geschlechterwissen und strukturelle Ungleichheiten manifestieren. In Bildern und Annahmen, die Schüler*innen und Studierende über die jeweiligen Fächer haben, werden diese vergeschlechtlichten Codierungen sichtbar. Der Beitrag fasst Ergebnisse ausgewählter Literatur zu Bildern von Informatik zusammen. Sie zeigen, wie die Befragten Informatik als männliches, weißes und westliches Fach konstruieren, welches Zugangs- und Aufstiegsmöglichkeiten mindestens einschränkt und ‚das Andere‘, also beispielsweise Frauen/Weiblichkeit, alles nicht-westliche, nicht-weiße – bzw. was diesen Begriffen zugeschrieben wird – abwertet. Beiträge zu Informatikbildern laufen jedoch Gefahr, bestehende Bilder zu reproduzieren. Insgesamt zeigen sich bei der Studienfachwahl in Deutschland teilweise große Unterschiede zwischen den Geschlechtern. So studieren Frauen deutlich seltener als Männer Fächer im MINT-Bereich, Männer dagegen deutlich seltener Fächer im sozialen Bereich. Der Beitrag stellt die Frage, warum solche Ungleichheiten trotz zahlreicher bildungspolitischer Interventionen stabil bleiben und sich auf der Ebene der individuellen Entscheidungen entsprechend konventionelle Orientierungen zeigen. Zunächst werden verschiedene Einflussfaktoren hinsichtlich der Studienfachwahl unter einer sozialisations- und entwicklungstheoretischen Perspektive in den Blick genommen. Im Anschluss daran werden die beharrlichen Unterschiede in den individuellen Orientierungen und Entscheidungen von Mädchen und Jungen aus einer geschlechtertheoretischen Perspektive als strukturelle Ungleichheiten eingeordnet. Zuletzt werden die mit diesen strukturellen Ungleichheiten zusammenhängenden Dynamiken von Öffnungen und Schließungen eines sozialen Feldes am Beispiel des Fachs Informatik weiter konkretisiert und es wird gezeigt, dass Veränderungen nur greifen können, wenn eine Fachkultur sich im Hinblick auf systematische Öffnungen wandelt. Im Fazit wird dafür plädiert, die verschiedenen Forschungsstränge und Theorieperspektiven, die im Beitrag aufgenommen werden, in Zukunft noch stärker zu verbinden.

In this paper we interrogate the practices of imagining in human-computer interaction (HCI), particularly in scenario building (SBE) and persona construction. We discuss the philosophical premises of HCI imaginings in rationalism, cognitivism and phenomenology, and we propose (feminist) new materialist philosophy as an enriching perspective that helps generate a holistic, relational perspective of users, imaginaries and technologies. In the end we explore the method of figurations as a potential tool for HCI design.

We live in a world that is increasingly shaped through computational technology. The expansion and pervasiveness of computing brings along opportunities and challenges for the field of HCI. New application domains evolve and technological advances pose novel interaction possibilities. But with computing's shaping power comes also the need for increased responsibility and attention to the societal, political and ecological impact of technology. In this conceptual paper, new materialist thinking is employed to locate these societal etc. aspects as inextricably enmeshed within computing research and development. New materialism is a multi-vocal, cross-disciplinary field of doing-thinking. In contrast to Western dichotomic tradition, a monistic, post-anthropocentric perspective is provided and matter as an active agent in world-making is acknowledged. Central to this paper is the questioning of the human and computer dichotomy at the core of the field of HCI. For this, a material-semiotic perspective on human-computer interaction is elaborated upon. Furthermore, the paradigm of interaction is revisited and reworked as a conception of agential intra-action, a term coined by physicist Karen Barad. From this interrogation of dichotomies and the notion of intra-action follow further conceptual shifts that are discussed as productive for the future of HCI, namely responsibility as specification of ethical agency and performativity in contrast to representationalism.

To become effective in the field of computing, gender research must explain its concepts to non-gender studies scholars and to convince them of their relevance. Our title "Making IT Work" claims that both can be done: interlinking gender research and computing, and by that improving IT systems. We present the "Gender-Extended Research and Development" (GERD) model, a process model which combines gender and diversity aspects with all phases of computing research and development. The model with seven phases is a generalization of common process models in computing. Gender/diversity expertise has been condensed into a number of aspects that characterize the social context of computing research. They can be related to and reflected during every phase. This reflection is somewhat operationalized by providing a list of questions for each combination of phase and aspect. Case studies as part of the model illustrate either in what way such reflections may help in research and development or what may happen if no such aspects have been included.

Our title "Making IT Work" claims that both can be done: interlinking gender research and computing, and by that improving IT systems. We present the "Gender-Extended Research and Development" (GERD) model, a process model which combines gender and diversity aspects with all phases of computing research and development. The model with seven phases is a generalization of common process models in computing. Gender/diversity expertise has been condensed into a number of aspects that characterize the social context of computing research. They can be related to and reflected during every phase. This reflection is somewhat operationalized by providing a list of questions for each combination of phase and aspect. Case studies as part of the model illustrate either in what way such reflections may help in research and development or what may happen if no such aspects have been included. %@ 978-1-4503-5346-5

Claude Draude analyzes embodied software agents - interface solutions that are designed to talk back and give emotional feedback - from a gender and media studies perspective. She addresses technological and sociocultural concepts in their interplay of shifting the boundary between what is considered as human and what as machine. The author discusses the technological realization of specific personality models that define the design of embodied software agents - emotion and gaze models, in particular. Finally, she explores these models in their broader cultural context by relating them to the prominent topic of the Turing test and the notion of the Uncanny Valley.
