Pro­gram De­scrip­tion

The master program REMENA is offered by the University of Kassel (UKAS), Germany, the Cairo University (CU), Egypt and the University of Monastir (UM), Tunisia. In the framework of the REMENA university network (RUN) it is also possible to spend one semester at the University of Sfax (US), Tunisia, or the German University in Cairo (GUC). It is an application-oriented program where graduates are expected to work for companies and institutions in the field of renewable energies to foster the further development on an international level.

The overall duration of the program is 24 months which are divided into four semesters. Students can choose between four study modes depending on the sites and topics they want to study:

Upon successful completion of the program, the student is awarded the double degree Kassel-Cairo from UKAS and CU:

Essentially, prospective applicants for the program should

  • hold a bachelor degree in engineering, natural sciences, economics or social sciences
  • have practical experience (internships, vocational education, professional work, and others) preferably in the energy sector
  • be highly motivated
  • be fluent in English.

As can be seen from the different study modes the first and the second semester are foreseen for basic modules and elective modules. In the third semester students are free to choose elective modules according to their interests and the fourth semester in Germany, MENA, etc. is foreseen for the master thesis module which can be conducted in companies or institutions being active in the field of renewable energies. The thesis itself takes six months. 

The module contents are both technical and non-technical. Intercultural topics including German and Arab language courses are integrated into the program. The list of modules can be found here. Modules totaling at least 120 credits must be passed where 32 credits are from basic modules, 58 credits are from elective modules and 30 credits are from the master thesis module.

As mentioned above, the primary professional activity of REMENA graduates will be in the field of application-oriented and/or business environments for renewable energies. This comprises jobs in consulting, acquisition and management of projects, institutional activities, interdisciplinary teams etc., where intercultural competencies beyond technical ones are of utmost importance for the success of the project at hand. However, for students with a sound technical background and depending on their professional experience, it is also possible to go for a PhD degree in a corresponding area.
