„A Framework for the Inspection of Optimization Algorithms“
  In the fields of heuristic optimization, we aim to get good solutions for computationally hard problems. Solving the Travelling Salesman Problem, for instance, means to find the shortest tour that goes through n cities and returns back to the starting point. Such problems often cannot be solved to optimality in feasible time due to their complexity. Thus, algorithms often start with a more or less random initial guess about the solution and then improve it step-by-step. This means performance has two dimensions: granted runtime until we stop the algorithm and take the best-so-far result, and the solution quality of that best-so-far result. Sufficient theoretical tools to assess the performance of such algorithms are still lacking.

„Daten verstehen durch geometrische Analysis“
  Daten sowie Methoden zur Gewinnung von Wissen aus diesen sind heutzutage ein allgegenwärtiger Untersuchungsgegenstand. Alle (maschinellen) Verfahren der Informatik zur Untersuchung von Daten benutzen dazu Features, e.g., Distanzen, welche durch die Algorithmen motiviert sind. Ein in diesem Zusammenhang sehr bekanntes Phänomen ist der „Fluch der Dimensionalität“ -- informell das Unvermögen, Daten sinnvoll zu trennen. Die Beobachtung in verschiedenen Zusammenhängen führte zu einer Reihe von empirischen Regeln für maschinelle Lernverfahren.

  In this talk, we wish to share the vision of a young city at the suburb of the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. Within 40 years, it has been transformed from an ex-mining land to an integrated city that comprises different services - property, business, hospitality, leisure, education, healthcare, etc. There are vast opportunities in integrating new technology, such as Internet of Things and big data, into the city and its services to achieve the goal to become a sustainable smart city. The talk will highlight existing and future ideas, and invite discussion and sharing of possible collaborations towards the goal.

„Cognitive Radio for Wireless Communications: Concepts and Applications“
  To meet rapidly growing traffic demands and accommodate large number of devices, more radio spectrum is needed for future wireless communications. Considering the scarcity of radio spectrum, it is needed to enhance the utilization of radio spectrum licensed exclusively to specific users. In cognitive radio, an unlicensed user, called a secondary user, is permitted to access the spectrum allocated to a licensed user, called a primary user.
