The project marked the fourth phase of a panel tracer study of German graduates conducted since 1983. The activities of former students from diverse fields of study had been examined from the time of their final exam until about ten years after graduation. The fourth questionnaire survey focused especially on the question: After ten years of professional experience: do study conditions still matter?

The empirical basis was a longitudinal study of German graduates in the period 1983-1995 who answered a questionnaire on their acquisition of skills, their transition to work, career and their professional activities. 1370 graduates from 21 higher education institutions of the three fields of mechanical engineering, economics and social work having finished studies from 1983 to 1985. They had already participated in three predecessor surveys.

The study was funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Science and the Hessian Ministry for Science and the Arts.
