Applications for associated PhD fellowships (University of Kassel)

The ICDD permanently invites applications for PhD supervision and institutional affiliation from qualified candidates with an agricultural or social science background who aim at applying for third-party funding (e.g. for a PhD scholarship of the German Academic Exchange Service, DAAD) or who already obtained funding for their doctoral research. Potential candidates should have a strong thematic overlap with the research themes of the ICDD. Final admission is subject to the willingness of an ICDD faculty member to act as PhD supervisor.

Application requirements:

  •  Award of a research scholarship from a third party funding institution (applicants who intend to apply for such a scholarship at a funding institution can also apply);

  •  Completed or almost completed MA/MSc degree, with excellent results, in a discipline related to the ICDD research themes;

  • High English proficiency (CEFR level: C1 or above), proven by one of the following language certificates: TOEFL, with a minimum score of 550 PBT (paper-based test) / 80 IBT (Internet-based test); IELTS 6.5 or above; Cambridge Certificate in

  •  Advanced English, or an equivalent (native speakers and applicants who have completed one of their first degrees fully in English do not have to provide an English proficiency certificate);

  • Academic or vocational experience in one of the disciplines related to the thematic field of development and decent work;


Interested candidates can submit a short application, allowing the selection committee to assess the thematic overlap, the profile of the candidate and his/her fulfillment of the general entrance criteria for the programme. On the basis of the short application, the applicant can be invited to submit a full application subsequently.

Short application should be written fully in English or German and can be sent anytime via email to ''. The email should mention the reasons for the candidate to apply and the funding status (e.g. intention to apply at a particular foundation etc.).

The attachment of the email should include the following pdf documents:

  • detailed curriculum vitae (including academic background, list of publications, professional experience, language skills, voluntary work, indication of two professors with full contact details, who can act as referee for the applicant);

  • (preliminary) PhD project proposal (about 2000 words, including topic, research question, short overview of the relevant literature, theoretical approach, research design and methodology);
