The Big Band can trace its roots back to the time of the department's founding in the 1970s. Although this makes it the oldest ensemble in the department, it reinvents itself every semester with a different thematic focus. Concerts in the university, Bergpark, Schlachthof or Theaterstübchen regularly leave an enthusiastic audience in their wake.
Director: Roman Beilharz
When top motivated, highly talented musicians of the Department of Music of the University of Kassel ask their lecturer to lead a brass band for intelligent, danceable music and this lecturer is Roman Beilharz, then it should be clear that the sound of the band could become fat. An explosive mix of the most interesting titles of the well-known urban brass bands Moop Mama and Meute have been rearranged exclusively for the Boomhorns and supplemented with hits by Peter Fox, Deichkind and other smashers.
Director: Andreas Cessak
Since 2005, Cantiamo Kassel has had a permanent place at the university and is open to all enthusiastic choir singers. New programs and projects are developed every semester.

The chamber choir consists of experienced singers and has already been able to establish itself in the cultural scene of Kassel and also nationwide in numerous competitions due to its broad repertoire, from the music of old masters to new music.
The Ensemble International emerged from weekly rehearsals of students and teachers of the institute and refugee musicians. Together they work on Arabic, Kurdish, Persian and German music.
Director: Students of the Department of Music; Mentoring: Andreas Klippert, Kiril Stankow.
The idea of this self-organized orchestra is to learn from and help each other in making music together and in musical direction. Here students can try out ensemble playing and conducting as well as the organization of a large ensemble.
Director: Rainer Salwiczek-Pfeifer
"In the all too quiet chamber, the guitarist always practices - alone!" To put a stop to this unfortunate circumstance, the exercise "Chamber Music with Guitar" takes place every semester. In changing instrumentations in mono (exclusively guitars) and mixed instrumentations (guitar and other instruments) basic chamber music principles are learned and rehearsed. The results are usually performed in the end-of-semester concert.
Director: Olaf Pyras
The Percussion Ensemble is open to all students of the Institute of Music. The selection of works will be announced in the course catalog at the beginning of the semester.

Event series
Extraordinary concert projects in Kassel - not only in the Eulensaal. What is played and what is thought, music and reflection are combined here in a stimulating, amusing, provocative, sometimes irritating, but never trivial way. The focus of the concerts is on contemporary music - the goal is not repertoire maintenance, but emphatic contemporaneity. This regularly includes works from the near and distant past.
Director: Janik Neß
