The idea to watch the film Maixabel (2021) by Icíar Bolláin together arose from the language practice course "Lectura y Escritura II", which is dedicated to the topic of post-conflicto vasco this semester. In addition to students and staff, numerous guests from the Kassel public also accepted the invitation.
The film tells the moving story of Maixabel Lasa, which is based on true events. 11 years after the murder of her husband by the Basque terrorist group ETA, she agrees to the request to meet one of the murderers in prison.
Fortunately, Dr. Patrick Eser (literary studies, Buenos Aires) agreed to introduce the film. He himself holds a doctorate in Basque and Catalan nationalism and moderated the discussion that followed the screening under the question "Narratives of reconciliation?". This got the audience talking about the Basque culture of remembrance and current issues of division. There was also a clear interest in further film evenings of this kind.
