Dr. Daria Gluhareva
Lecturer in Foreign Language Learning and Teaching of English
Bio
I am a lifelong language learner whose experiences span several corners of the globe. I am interested in all aspects of language acquisition, particularly non-native speech, pronunciation instruction, and psychological aspects of language learning. In general, I am passionate about finding evidence-based strategies for teaching languages, both in classroom settings and beyond.
I recently finished my PhD in linguistics at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada, where I researched how non-native speech is assessed by native listeners and by the speakers themselves. Previously, I earned a B.A. (magna cum laude) in psychology from New York University and an M.A. in theoretical and applied linguistics from Universitat Pompeu Fabra. As part of my master’s thesis, I researched how beat gestures can be used for teaching English stress and rhythm.
I truly value teaching and have had opportunities to work as an instructor for learners of various ages and backgrounds. During my time at Simon Fraser University, I worked as a sessional instructor and term lecturer, teaching courses on communication and language, applied linguistics, and sociolinguistics. I have also taught English as an Additional Language in the U.S., South Korea, Spain, and Canada.
I am thrilled to be joining the team at the University of Kassel! I look forward to contributing to the chair's activities and learning from the stories and insights of my colleagues and students.
Areas of research and teaching interest
Second language learning and teaching, speech assessment and self-assessment (comprehensibility, intelligibility, accentedness), language learner psychology, complex dynamic systems theory, pronunciation instruction, and suprasegmentals.
