  • 1965-69: Studies at the universities of Münster, Geneva, Lisbon and Bochum.
  • 1971: Dr. phil., summa cum laude, Ruhr-University Bochum. Major: English, Minors: French and Portuguese (awarded the university prize for outstanding thesis 1971).
  • 1976: Post-doctoral degree (Habilitation), Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany.
