Dissertation project

Das Polychronicon von Ranulph Higden. Wissen, Weltchronik und Weltkarte

The universal chronicle by Benedictine Ranulph Higden (d. 1363/64) provides us with a comprehensive collection of late medieval knowledge. As an account of history and geography, of miracles and exempla it also reveals underlying concepts of knowledge and learning that differ substantially from modern ideas. This study explores these conceptions, which form a crucial basis for further appraisal of the Polychronicon's content, focusing especially on the maps that are preserved in 18 copies of the chronicle. Design, content and function of these mappae mundi reveal the prevalent interests and practices in the context of the Polychronicon. Its example thus opens up new perspectives on knowledge in the Middle Ages.
