“Peacekeeping and Conflict in the South-West of the Empire. City Alliances in Swabia, 1347-1389” (working title)

The doctoral project examines strategies of conflict management and conflict resolution, and the diverging security interests of the members of the Swabian League of Cities in the second half of the fourteenth century. In this period the Swabian region was characterized by the existence of numerous imperial and free cities, within a territory with many different rulers. In order to assert their autonomy, the Swabian cities formed an alliance and engaged in eventful conflicts with the Roman-German kingdom, the princes opposing it (the Fürstenopposition), and local knights and lords,. The central actor was the Swabian League of Cities, which existed from 1376 to 1389. The aim of the project is to use documents, records and correspondence of the allied cities to illustrate the dynamic developments in conflict management and to cast light on the underlying security interests of the parties. To achieve this, the project considers the cooperation and communication between the polities in the period from 1347 to 1389. The analysis is carried out on three levels: firstly via the intentions of the actors involved, in their particular spatial and political context; secondly via the strategies and means used by the League of Cities to resolve conflicts and ensure security, and thirdly via the cooperation between the cities and their approach to military conflicts.
