Zur Veröffentlichung der Publikation „Designing Modernity: Architecture In The Arab World 1945-1973“ lädt das Goethe-Institut am Freitag, den 6. Mai und Samstag, den 7. Mai 2022 zu einem Symposium und einer Buchpräsentation im Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin ein. Die Publikation untersucht die Entfaltung einer transkulturellen Architektur der Moderne im arabischen Raum. Das Projekt wurde 2019 vom Goethe-Institut in den Palästinensischen Gebieten initiiert und kuratorisch von den Architekturwissenschaftlern Philipp Oswalt von der Universität zu Kassel und George Arbid vom Arab Centre for Architecture in Beirut geleitet. Die Veranstaltung kann auch im Livestream verfolgt werden.
Seit 2019 fragt das Goethe-Institut Ramallah gemeinsam mit internationalen Expert*innen nach den Einflüssen der architektonischen Moderne in der arabischen Welt. „In Städten wie Beirut, Amman, Kuwait-Stadt, Jericho, Gaza-Stadt oder auch Kairo hat sich in der Aufbruchphase nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg eine herausragende moderne Architektur entwickelt, die eigenständig und in sich vielfältig ist“, erklären die Architekturwissenschaftler George Arbid und Philipp Oswalt. „Mit dem Buchprojekt wollen wir dieses oft vernachlässigte kulturelle Erbe würdigen und damit nicht nur einen Beitrag für seinen Erhalt leisten, sondern auch das verfälschende Bild westlich dominierter Architekturgeschichtsschreibung korrigieren“. Das Ergebnis ist eine Betrachtung in zehn fokussierten Fallstudien im Irak, dem Libanon, Kuwait, Syrien, den palästinensischen Gebieten, Jordanien, Marokko und Ägypten unter Beteiligung von Amin Alsaden, Aziza Chaouni, Dima J. Yaser, Janset Shawash, Leïla El-Wakil, Mercedes Volait, Mohamed Elshahed, Pelin Tan, Rafee Hakky, Sara Saragoça, Wael Samhouri und George Arbid.
Die bilinguale Publikation in Arabisch und Englisch wird in den Verlagen Jovis (Berlin) und Riwaq (Ramallah) erscheinen sowie als E-Book erhältlich sein.
Das Symposium mit den Autor*innen, geladenen Expert*innen und den Herausgeber*innen findet am 6. Mai (10-18:30 Uhr) und 7. Mai (10-16 Uhr) 2022 im Haus der Kulturen der Welt statt. Im Anschluss erfolgt die Buchpräsentation am 7. Mai 2022 um 18 Uhr, bei der Redner*innen aus dem arabischen und europäischen Raum die Publikation sowie die Ergebnisse des Symposiums vorstellen und diskutieren. Das Symposium und die Buchpräsentation sind öffentlich und kostenlos zugänglich, finden in englischer Sprache statt und werden live gestreamt.
