Lecture Series Fusion: Homeland Dialogs

University of Kassel, Winter Term 2020/2021

In view of the changes and instabilities in everyday life that are deepening with globalization and digitalization and the emerging right-wing populism, the concept of "Heimat" has received new attention. Already the first boom of the concept of Heimat since the end of the 19th century was a countermovement to the industrialization of that time. Heimat is a dazzling concept that not only expresses an appreciation of rural areas and cultural traditions, but often serves to distance oneself from external influences and to ward off contemporary forms of expression. At the same time, however, it is also an expression of the legitimate search for holding points in the centrifugal modernization processes that continue to change our everyday life and our environment.

The lecture series will on the one hand critically reflect on the concept of Heimat and address its political dangers, and on the other hand present innovative contemporary practices that make use of existing cultural potentials and peculiarities in rural areas, but at the same time open up new emancipatory potentials.

Due to the pandemic, the lecture series will take place digitally on the online video conferencing service Zoom. Two guests are invited to each event, after their presentations a discussion with the audience will follow, moderated by Philipp Oswalt. Guests include scientists and politicians, architects, planners and artists, citizens' initiatives and journalists from Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Europe. In order to stimulate the interaction between guests and audience, a whiteboard on Miro complements the video conferences. Students will accompany the lecture series in a theory seminar and will participate in the discussions. The events will be documented//
