Market Roof Kassel

The task of the bachelor project from the winter semester 2017/2018 was to design and detail a canopy for the historic market hall in Kassel. The canopy is planned for the outdoor space to the west of the hall, which is transformed into an extension of the internal sales area during market times. A permanent roofing should be planned for this large-scale outdoor area, to protects the sales stands, visitors and operators from weather influences. The outdoor sales take place in all seasons as well as in all weather conditions. The canopy must therefore provide protection against rain and snow, but also protect against excessive sunshine. At the same time, natural illumination had to be ensured. Artificial illumination should also be provided, since the installation of the stands begins already in the early morning hours.

The roof covers an area of approximately 35 x 35 meters. The supports of the roof had to be placed in such a way that they do not restrict the functionality of the market stands and the traffic areas in between. The load-bearing structure must ensure the load transfer into the underlying lower floor, which is currently used as an underground car park.
