The excursion will visit selected Berlin projects focused on renovation and the revitalization of vacant properties. Using current examples, we will explore strategies for transforming existing buildings as well as alternative project development and planning models. Visits will include the model project Rathausblock in Kreuzberg, the VOLLGUT Areal in Neukölln, and the Haus der Statistik, which exemplify cooperative, public-interest-oriented approaches to revitalizing vacant properties.
In addition, historical references to Berlin’s urban renewal will be included, such as projects from the “Gentle Urban Renewal” initiative, the IBA Altbau 1984–1987. We will also visit contested open/green spaces, such as Tempelhofer Feld, and discuss the pressure that the current “Bauturbo” policy exerts on these spaces, as well as meet with initiatives working to preserve them.
