Samuel Korn ist Forscher im Bereich Geschichte und Theorie der Architektur sowie des kuratorischen Designs. Er ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Universität Kassel, wo er im Studiengang Architekturtheorie und Entwerfen lehrt. In seiner Forschung befasst sich Korn mit architektonischen wie auch mit nicht-entwurflich hervorgebrachten Artefakten und untersucht deren Verhältnis zur Gesellschaft sowie zur von ihr gebauten und umgebauten Umwelt. Seine Arbeiten sind an der Schnittstelle von Architektur- und Ausstellungsgeschichte verortet und verstehen Gestaltungsprozesse ausdrücklich als Resultate komplexer Aushandlungen. Im Zentrum steht dabei das Bedingtsein architektonischer und anderer kultureller Artefakte sowie die Analyse der Prozesse ihrer Hervorbringung. Thematische Schwerpunkte seiner Arbeit bilden die moderne Architektur und die Nachkriegsarchitektur, Kunst- und Architekturausstellungen sowie die Entwicklung der Ausstellungs- und Museumskultur.

Seine Promotion (Oktober 2025, summa cum laude) untersucht die sukzessive Erweiterung des Ausstellungsformats der documenta in den baulichen Bestand der Stadt. Analysiert wird dabei eine Form von Gestaltung, die nicht entwurflich hervorgebracht wird. Die Arbeit begreift Ausstellungsräume als Resultate vielschichtiger Aushandlungsprozesse zwischen kuratorischen, künstlerischen, räumlichen und gesellschaftlichen Konstellationen und konzeptualisiert die documenta-Ausstellungsreihe als neuartigen Typ, der durch Montage und Umdeutung vorgefundener Räume sowie der in ihnen eingeschriebenen Ideen und Geschichten entsteht.

Seine veröffentlichten Forschungsarbeiten basieren überwiegend auf Artefaktanalysen und Archivrecherchen. Sie behandeln unter anderem die Eröffnungsausstellung des Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum MAN transFORMS (1976), Hans Holleins Museum Abteiberg in Mönchengladbach, Oswald Matthias Ungers’ Projekt City Metaphors (1976) sowie dessen Architektur für die Ausstellung Westkunst (1981). Texte von Korn erschienen unter anderem in Architectural Theory Review, dem Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians und Wolkenkuckucksheim.

Zu seinen kuratorischen Projekten zählen MAN transFORMS: The Documents, gemeinsam mit Laurent Stalder an der ETH Zürich (2016), sowie Kooperationen mit Wilfried Kuehn für Alles ist Architektur im Museum Abteiberg und Hollein im MAK Wien (beide 2014).

Samuel Korn is a researcher in the history and theory of architecture and curatorial design. He is a research associate at the University of Kassel, where he teaches in the Theory of Architecture and Architectural Design program.

His research engages with architectural as well as non-designed artifacts and examines their relationship to society and to the built and transformed environment. Situated at the intersection of architectural and exhibition history, his work explicitly understands design processes as the outcome of complex negotiations. Central to his research is the conditioned nature of architectural and other cultural artifacts and the analysis of the processes through which they are produced. Thematic focal points of his work include modern and postwar architecture, art and architecture exhibitions, and the development of exhibition and museum culture.

His Ph.D. dissertation (October 2025, summa cum laude) investigates the successive expansion of the documenta exhibition format into the existing urban fabric. It analyzes a mode of design that is not produced through conventional architectural authorship. The study conceptualizes exhibition spaces as the result of multifaceted negotiations among curatorial, artistic, spatial, and societal constellations and frames the documenta exhibition series as a novel type formed through the montage and reinterpretation of pre-existing spaces and the ideas and histories embedded within them.

His published research is predominantly based on artifact analysis and archival research. It addresses topics such as the opening exhibition of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum MAN transFORMS (1976), Hans Hollein’s Museum Abteiberg in Mönchengladbach, Oswald Matthias Ungers’s City Metaphors project (1976), and his architecture for the seminal 1981 exhibition Westkunst. His writing has appeared, among others, in Architectural Theory Review, the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, and Wolkenkuckucksheim.

His curatorial projects include MAN transFORMS: The Documents, co-curated with Laurent Stalder at ETH Zurich in 2016, as well as collaborations with Wilfried Kuehn on Alles ist Architektur at the Museum Abteiberg and Hollein at the MAK Vienna, both in 2014.
