Second place for the "LegalWriter" project at the Delina LEARNTEC Innovation Award 2025
The project "LegalWriter - AI-supported learning system to promote legal writing skills" from the University of Kassel and Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH has won second place in the delina Innovation Award for Digital Education in the university category.
In "LegalWriter", Thiemo Wambsganß (Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH), Prof. Dr. Matthias Söllner (University of Kassel) and Florian Weber (University of Kassel) have developed a learning tool that offers law students individual support in writing structured and convincing legal texts based on artificial intelligence methods. The aim of the project is to sustainably support law students through intelligent writing support. The AI-based learning system serves to promote legal teaching, particularly with regard to legal writing skills. Law students train individually in writing case solutions and receive individual feedback from the system on the quality of their application of the expert opinion style. Errors are not only marked as such, but also enable students to learn from their individual mistakes in a bottom-up process, to recognize structural errors and thus to permanently improve their legal writing skills.
The system is currently being successfully evaluated at the University of Hamburg and is already impressively demonstrating its effectiveness in legal higher education. The nomination recognizes the researchers' commitment to advancing digital learning solutions in the field of law.
Special thanks go to Prof. Dr. Gerrit Hornung, LL.M., Dr. Sarah Bachmann, Hendrik Link, Seyed Parsa Neshaei and Pablo Weingart for their valuable contributions to the project.
A big thank you also goes to the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and VDI/VDE Innovation + Technik GmbH for the funding and development within the project "Komp-HI" at the University of Kassel - part of the federal-state initiative AI in higher education.
A first prototype of the project was published at the ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI) 2024 in the paper "LegalWriter: An Intelligent Writing Support System for Structured and Persuasive Legal Case Writing for Novice Law Students".
