Current use of artificial intelligence as a learning and reflection tool for learners in a VET context - a systematic literature review

The effects of artificial intelligence (AI) are promising, far-reaching and inevitable, even if they are still difficult to predict (Ostendorf 2019). Since AI-supported technologies are increasingly being used in (training) professions due to the digitalization of work and business processes (e.g. Goller et al. 2021) (Donald 2019) and trainees and employees are confronted with new AI-integrating occupational fields, a comprehensive understanding of AI is now also part of building professional competence. Learners should therefore be familiarized with AI functions in a practical, interactive and critical way, especially in vocational education (Seufert and Meier 2023). Although AI is already used in the VET context, e.g. for lesson design, automated correction or solution generation (Zawacki-Richter et al. 2020), there is a lack of agglomerated knowledge about the diverse ways in which AI functions are explicitly made available to learners in VET and their benefits. This article therefore presents the results of a systematic review, which on the one hand provides an overview of the AI applications currently being discussed in vocational education and training. On the other hand, the benefits of AI for vocational education and training will be concretized. In this respect, the AI applications are analyzed with regard to their cognitive and/or metacognitive learning function, since both - information processing processes as well as reflection on the learning process - contribute to the development of professional competence (Rausch et al. 2024).
