With the start of the new semester, the Department of Economics at the University of Kassel welcomes Prof. Dr. Josua Oll as the new Professor of Sustainability Management. Prof. Dr. Bärbel Wesselborg has accepted the W2 professorship for "Vocational Education with a Focus on Nursing and Health" and will start on 01.09.2026.

Dr. Tania Bazzani will take over the substitute professorship "Civil Law and Labour Law in the Digital Society" in the summer semester 2026.

The Institute of Vocational Education and Training says goodbye to Dr. Juliane Dieterich as a long-time employee and Head of Vocational Education and Training with a focus on nursing and health.

Research Group Public Law, IT Law and Environmental Law:

In April 2026, the research project Video Use in Adolescence: Manipulation, Propaganda, Information and Resilience (VAMPIR) started at the department of Prof. Dr. Gerrit Hornung, LL.M.. The research project aims to investigate technical, social and legal measures to counteract video-based disinformation and deepfakes. The legal sub-project is responsible for developing proposals for legal measures that are in line with the empirical results of the partner disciplines. VAMPIR is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) with 2.07 million euros (funding code: 16KIS2498K - 16KIS2502). The project will run for three years (April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2029).

FG Sustainable Marketing:

Prof. Dr. Ralf Wagner and Prof. Dr. Mohammed Salem were granted 109,000 euros by the DAAD for the project "Closing the Loop - Fashion Disposal Choices".

FG Environmental and Behavioral Economics:

The German Research Foundation (DFG) is funding a new project entitled " Preferences for prosocial interventions and their role for the formation of institutions and cooperation (Prosocial interventions)" at the Department of Environmental and Behavioral Economics (Professor Dr. Astrid Dannenberg) from June 2026 with a total amount of €319,096 over a period of three years.

Business Informatics Group, in particular Enterprise Systems and Platforms:

Important milestone reached in the directions research project. The departments of Prof. Hornung and Prof. Lins have completed the development of data protection certification for school information systems. The certification procedure was submitted to the official approval process at the German Accreditation Body in March. Once the approval process has been completed, the certification will be available on the education market and will help to create transparency and legal certainty.

FG Business Informatics and Systems Development:

The interdisciplinary KOMP-HI project was brought to a close after a four-year term with a closing event as part of the 20th anniversary of the ITeG Research Center at the University of Kassel. The project had a total funding volume of around 1.83 million euros at the University of Kassel. In KOMP-HI, six interdisciplinary research teams from the fields of law, business informatics, psychology and mechanical engineering worked on how AI-supported learning systems can promote subject-specific and interdisciplinary skills in higher education. The results include 33 national and international publications, six journal articles, several awards and extensive transfer activities.

Project group for constitutionally compatible technology design (provet):

As part of the PRETINA project(Priv.-Doz. Dr. Christian Geminn and Aljoscha Schörnig), the University of Kassel will be represented at this year's Gamescom in Cologne (26.08.-30.08.), the world's largest video games trade fair, as part of the project consortium - as it was last year. The revised version of the VR game "AbracaData" developed within the project will be presented, which uses eye-tracking sensor technology for game interaction. The aim is to formulate recommendations for the socially acceptable and legally compliant use of eye tracking in gaming based on the feedback and data collected from trade fair visitors.

Launch of the DEEP-PRISMA research project: Since the beginning of 2026, the University of Kassel has been participating in the BMFTR-funded joint project "DEEP-PRISMA", which is investigating the legal handling of AI-generated and modified content. In collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research in Karlsruhe (ISI), the University of Tübingen (International Center for Ethics in the Sciences and Humanities, IZEW) and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis, ITAS), this three-year research project is analyzing the social and legal consequences of deepfakes and developing recommendations for action and proposals for regulatory approaches on this basis. On the University of Kassel side, the project group verfassungsverträgliche Technikgestaltung (provet) headed by PD Dr. Christian Geminn at the Wissenschaftliches Zentrum für Informationstechnik-Gestaltung (ITeG) is involved. The working group is involved in analyzing and evaluating relevant legal regulations that are intended to protect against the misuse of deepfake technologies. It is also involved in the planning and implementation of empirical surveys. The results of these surveys are also subjected to a legal analysis and, together with the synthesis of the legal framework, form the basis for the design of regulatory proposals.

On Wednesday, October 8, 2025, the Scientific Center for Information Technology Design (ITeG) celebrated its 20th anniversary. The event offered a varied program of greetings and birthday wishes, panel discussions, project presentations and insights into current research.

The 30th Doctoral Seminar on IT, Service, Innovation and Collaboration (WISIC) took place as an off-site event in St. Ottilien from October 29 to 31, 2025. The aim of the seminar, which was attended by Doctoral candidates from the University of St. Gallen and the University of Kassel, was to promote scientific exchange between the chairs and provide new impetus for dissertation projects.

On March 16, 2026, Jan Marco Leimeister spoke about the betting business and the associated prediction markets - markets on which expectations about future events are traded - in the SWR Kultur knowledge format "Impuls". Such systems can deliver astonishingly precise forecasts and are discussed in companies, politics and research, among other areas.

Lins, S.:

Participation in Girlsday. The Department of Business Informatics, in particular Enterprise Systems and Platforms, gave six schoolgirls from Kassel an insight into the use of artificial intelligence. During the "AI check", various systems were presented and their responsible use discussed together.

Söllner, M.:

The Department of Information Systems and Systems Development (WISE) was represented in many ways at WI 2025 in Münster. Martin Hänel took part in the Doctoral Consortium and received valuable feedback on his dissertation project. Prof. Dr. Matthias Söllner supported the Doctoral Consortium as a mentor. In addition, Florian Weber presented his work "Guiding the Cognitive Writing Process of Law Students: Designing and Evaluating an Intelligent Learning System to Improve Legal Writing" in the new Research Spotlight format.

Sophia Meywirth was selected for the Doctoral Consortium of the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) 2025 in Nashville, USA. The Doctoral Consortium is one of the most prestigious formats for doctoral students in the international information systems community.

Prof. Dr. Matthias Söllner was represented at the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) 2026 and participated as a mentor in the HICSS Doctoral Consortium.

To disseminate the results of the KOMP-HI project, an interdisciplinary research team from the University of Kassel led by Professor Dr. Matthias Söllner and Professor Dr. Gerrit Hornung, LL.M., presented key project results at a joint ITeG and hessian.AI information event on AI-based learning systems in higher education. The focus was on the socio-technical design of hybrid intelligence systems for individualized skills development as well as legal and ethical issues surrounding the use of AI in higher education. The "LegalWriter" learning system developed by Florian Weber and Hendrik Link, which supports law students in learning legal writing skills, was presented as an application example.
