Water-saving cultivation methods and regional value creation as an adaptation to climate change in organic vegetable production

Plant, Resources & Water Forum

Water IconWater,

WSK IconWSK

Brief description

Water-saving cultivation methods play a central role in the agriculture of the future. Mirjam Westram (HS Geisenheim) shows how the targeted use of compost and manure increases water storage in the soil, stabilizes yields and promotes healthy cultivation systems in the long term - an opportunity for climate-adapted agriculture. Benjamin Ruch (University of Kassel) will provide brief insights into the extent to which organic mulch can influence the water balance in leek cultivation. Building on this, Hanna Pohlmann & Benjamin Ruch (University of Kassel) will show the potentials and obstacles in adapting to climate change in vegetable production and marketing in northern Hesse.

Speakers: Hanna Pohlmann & Benjamin Ruch (University of Kassel); Mirjam Westram (HS Geisenheim)

Wednesday

Nitrogen dynamics and humus build-up: plowing strategies for catch crops in the test

Practical research networks, B 4.8

Short description

Different cultivation and plowing strategies for catch crops were tested on eight organic farms and the experimental farm of the University of Kassel. In addition to traditional plow ploughing and non-rotating spring ploughing, the use of a new ridger (prototype from the Treffler company) was also investigated with regard to the nitrogen cycle and subsequent crop development. We show the first results.

Speakers: Johanna Hoppe (University of Kassel)

Moderation: Esther Mieves (Practice Research Network Hesse)

Wednesday

15:00 - 15:30

Study eco! University, university of applied sciences or technical college?

University of Kassel, B 5.9

Brief description

The University of Kassel in Witzenhausen, the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development and the Kleve College of Organic Farming have decades of experience in training specialists and managers for organic farming. Depending on your personal abilities and interests, the best path for you may be to go to a technical college, a university of applied sciences or a university. After an overview of the locations and degree programs, we would like to shed some light on the differences and similarities between universities, universities of applied sciences and technical colleges in the "short question - short answer" format.

How practical are the programs? What opportunities are available after graduation? How can you pursue your own interests? Is there the possibility of a dual study program? Afterwards, there will be an opportunity to discuss any remaining questions with the contact persons and students. The format will take place on both days, the Kleve technical college can only participate in person on June 18.

Wednesday

3.45 p.m.

BÖL guided tour of the processing value chain

Wednesday

17:00 - 18:00

Network meeting for students and alumni from Witzenhausen

University of Kassel, B 5.9

Brief description

Cordial invitation to a network meeting of former and current Witzenhausen students. In addition to a brief insight into current developments in the department, there will be an opportunity to exchange ideas over coffee or cold drinks. The event will take place at the Strohballen near the bar.

Water conservation potential of organic farming underestimated - a critical look at research

Plant, Resources & Water Forum

Brief description

We have analyzed studies on nitrate yields of organic agriculture (OA) compared to conventional agriculture (CA) in an agronomic quality assessment. The evaluation of only suitable studies leads to a significant reduction of the high variance of the result values mentioned in meta-analyses. The result is clear: organic farming can significantly reduce N outputs by 32% in comparison.

Speakers: Johanna Hoppe (University of Kassel)

Thursday

11.45 a.m.

BÖL guided tour of the processing value chain

Thursday

13:00 - 13:45

Noble mushrooms on wood - new value creation opportunities for organic farms?

Forum Compost, cycles & AI

WSK IconWSK

Brief description

Wood-decomposing fungi such as oyster mushrooms, king oyster mushrooms or shitake produce high-quality protein. Can agricultural waste and buildings be used in a different way? What opportunities are there for organic farms to get involved in mushroom production? Impulses from production will be presented in a practical way in a discussion round with the audience and representatives from the organic sector.

Speakers: Birge Wolf & Thorsten Michaelis (University of Kassel)

Thursday

13:15 - 14:00

The farmer as water manager against the background of irrigation projections up to 2100

Forum Compost, cycles & AI

Water IconWater

Brief description

Agricultural landscapes shape the water cycles of terrestrial ecosystems to a large extent. A water demand analysis for Germany has shown that the amount of irrigation water in Germany could probably increase threefold. Whether rainwater becomes unproductive or productive or replenishes the soil water supply is determined not only by weather conditions and location factors but also by agriculture. Which processes will dominate in the future is largely determined by "The farmer as water manager".

Speakers: Prof. Tobias Weber (University of Kassel)

Thursday

15:00 - 15:45

Quality-differentiated harvest - economic potential and feasibility in organic farming

Forum Compost, Cycles & AI

Brief description

The lecture is dedicated to differentiated harvesting in organic cereals based on quality differences within a field. This allows, for example, feed wheat and bread wheat to be harvested and marketed separately. By using NIRS (near-infrared spectroscopy) and drone images, differences in quality can be precisely recorded and taken into account in planning. For this purpose, the quality expectation for partial areas of a field is calculated before the harvest.

Speakers: Anna Prasun (University of Göttingen)

Thursday

16:00 - 16:45

Automatic monitoring of functional biodiversity in agroecosystems with digital sensors

Forum Compost, Cycles & AI

Short description

How can functional biodiversity in agroecosystems be recorded quickly and minimally invasively? An automatic monitoring of insects using digital sensors based on acoustic methods is explained, which, in combination with AI, opens up new possibilities for the continuous recording of biological diversity. The practice of sensor-based biodiversity monitoring will be highlighted and why it plays a central role in the integration of biodiversity into cultivation systems.

Speakers: Christian Bödeker (University of Kassel)
