N use efficiency of selected potato varieties and assessment of further agronomic traits, not accounted for in the Descriptive Variety List

This research proposal comprises a supplemental field trial that aims to examine further agronomic traits of potato varieties that - until now - were not taken into account by the Federal Plant Variety Office. Therefore, the main objective of this research project is to investigate into variety-specific traits such as nitrogen use efficiency, translocation of assimilates from canopy into tubers as a function of late blight epidemic, as well as variety-specific weed suppression potential as affected by growth type, canopy growth and leaf area index. These characteristics shall be considered in terms of their impact on final tuber yield for a range of 18 varieties. The results should promote knowledge that may allow organic potato growers a more efficient use of their limited resources.
