DFG Research Unit Kicked Off: Kili-SES Phase II

We are excited to announce that the second phase of the research unit on the role of nature for human well-being in the Kilimanjaro Social-Ecological System (Kili-SES) officially began in May 2025. The research unit is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and aims to advance our understanding of the complex relationships between people and nature in the Kilimanjaro region.

The Kili-SES research unit comprises 15 research institutes from Germany, Switzerland and Tanzania, and is led by the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ). The Section of International Agricultural Policy and Environmental Governance is leading sub-project 5, which focuses on understanding the role of governance and institutions in social-ecological transformations in the Kilimanjaro region.
