New externally funded project for the Department of Transportation Planning and Transportation Systems:

“INA – Innovative Approaches to Utilizing App-Based Tracking Data”

How can tracking data be used even more comprehensively for mobility research? Prof. Dr. Carsten Sommer and Dr. Franziska Henkel from the Department of Transportation Planning and Transportation Systems at the University of Kassel, in collaboration with motiontag GmbH, are exploring this question in a new research project funded by the DFG. The project begins on October 1, 2026.

The mobility data collected via motiontag’s tracking app offers untapped potential for research. The project will therefore examine, on the one hand, how the quality of the data can be assessed and further improved. On the other hand, the project aims to identify new scientific applications for the existing data. For example, this should make it possible to examine long-term patterns and dynamics in mobility behavior. Naturally, compliance with applicable data protection requirements will be ensured throughout the process.

The goal of the project is to make motiontag’s tracking data available for mobility research beyond its current project-specific use and to identify new scientific and practical planning applications. In the long run, the data can thus help to better understand mobility trends and inform traffic planning and measures more effectively.
