Optimization of Timber Multi-storey Buildings against Earthquake Impact

Timber wood constructions offer a great many advantages against other constructions: they are light, they can be built in a short space of time and show an advanced workmanship due to their prefabrication. Related to building physics and energy consumption as well as bearing and deformability behaviour, European timber constructions achieve, by now, the highest standards. But so far, there is only little experience in the area of multi-storey buildings regarding earthquake protection.
Due to this reason, the research project “Optimization of Timber Multi-storey Buildings against Earthquake impact” – short: OPTIMBER-QUAKE” – was launched: The goal is to optimize and to enhance building-systems and connecting details for multi-storey timber buildings in areas endangered of earthquakes. This involves in detail:

  • Experimental  examination of wall and cover elements
  • Development of ductile connections for wall and cover elements
  • Examination of the interaction between different structure elements during an earthquake
  • Development of a progressive calculation approach for multi-storey timber constructions
  • Improvement of the current engineering rules
