Research

The research topics of the Institute of Mechanics and Dynamics are extended continuum mechanical modelling, the numerical simulation and experimental verification of models, and simulation strategies.

The enhanced mechanical systems constitute the foundation of a realistic understanding of how structures behave under a variety of influences, which allows us to generate reliable predictions during the phase of construction and during long time usage. Examples of these models are the interaction between chemical processes, humidity and heat conduction, and mechanically induced deformations and damages in concrete. Likewise the interaction between electromagnetic fields and the thermomechanics of metallic components in the course of a thermomechanical forming process, which includes liquid cooling, is investigated.

Furthermore, higher accuracy numerical techniques are developed, which are capable of solving problems, not only in the field of classical nonlinear structural dynamics, but also highly nonlinear and time dependent multi-field problems, reliably and with determinable accuracy.

The development and investigation of methods and algorithms is carried out with simulations of both current and innovative new structural concepts. Fundamental research and experiments to validate the simulations are performed at the Institute’s laboratory.  Therefore measurement instrumentation for thermomechanical analyses is available: a shaker and transmitters for dynamic structural investigations.
