The increasing use of materials and energy in ever more sophisticated products results in growing waste quantities of higher complexity. At the Research Center for Resource Management and Solid Waste Engineering, it is our goal to develop solutions in the domain of waste management and recycling that reduce environmental impact and increase resource efficiency based on a thorough understanding of material and energy flows.


In research, tools and methods for the analysis, assessment and design of material cycles are developed and applied to waste-resource-systems to identify optimal waste management solutions. Our research builds on the investigation of waste characteristics and treatment processes as well as on systems analysis techniques for analyzing and optimizing material and energy flows. Our research is of interdisciplinary nature and includes not only the scientific-technical dimension but also social science disciplines.

Our teaching covers all areas of waste management including recycling, recovery and waste disposal. Our teaching is research-guided, which means that it builds on current research in and it reflects the scientific discourse.
