INCHER Research Colloquium: Dr. Jian Wang will talk about "The specialist paradox: Skill, signal, and exploration in scientific careers"

At the INCHER colloquium, Associate Prof. Dr. Jian Wang (Lancaster University Leipzig) will present his recent research and speak about the decision to be a specialist or generalist as a critical choice for scientists and effects of specialization on academic careers.

Authors Abstract:

The decision to be a specialist or generalist is a critical choice for scientists, yet the impact of specialization on career development, particularly for PhD students, remains underexplored. This paper investigates the effects of specialization on academic careers, focusing on three key aspects: (1) distinguishing between skill- and signal-based mechanisms by examining how specialization influences research performance (for the skill-based mechanism) and academic career progression, independent of research performance (for the signal-based mechanism); (2) comparing the effects of specialization at early career stages (during PhD study and job search) versus later career stages (post-PhD and tenure promotion); and (3) exploring how exploration, defined as the intellectual distance between a PhD student’s research and their supervisor’s, moderates these effects. Using a unique dataset of archival, survey, and bibliometric data from 685 life sciences PhD students in Japan, we find that: (1) Specialization negatively affects research performance (in terms of both productivity and impact) consistently across both early and later career stages; (2) Specialization positively influences the likelihood of securing an academic job after graduation, but has no significant effect on tenure attainment; and (3) Exploration mitigates the negative effects of specialization on productivity at both career stages and magnifies the positive effect of specialization on securing initial academic placement. These findings contribute to the literature on scientific careers and PhD training, offering insights into how specialization shapes career trajectories and providing implications for students, supervisors, and science policy.
