Sedentarisation and Land Dynamics in Northern Benin

How is sedentarisation reshaping land, livelihoods, and identity for Fulani agropastoral communities in northern Benin? In the region, sedentary Fulani communities are experiencing structural transformations. As crop fields expand and grazing corridors contract, land management increasingly involves fixed boundaries and restrictions on traditional livestock mobility.

A new short film by PhD fellow Eunice Adwoa Sarpong documents these dynamics by examining how Fulani families adapt their daily practices, navigate new land-use rules, adjust herd management strategies, and maintain cultural identity amid agricultural expansion.

This output aligns with the United Nations International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026), contributing ground-level insights into rangeland management, pastoral survival, and agricultural land balance. The research is conducted under the DecLaRe project in partnership with WASCAL, the University of Kassel, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Université de Parakou, University for Development Studies, University of Hohenheim, and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK).
